The photograph I looked at was taken by Michael Kenna. It is a photograph of Gramercy Park on a winter morning in New York City. The photo has an extensive depth of field, but also has a soft focus. It is a serene and quiet photo showing no one, but the park covered in a blanket of soft, white, snow. I believe the photographer wants to portray the beauty and serenity of the park. This photo relates to the others in the same series, because all of the photos are taken in low contrast. Also all of Kenna’s photos show important and popular places in New York City.
This is a lovely photo. It is very serene and Kenna emphasizes this with a symmetrical composition. The dark urn is in the middle with a dark tree on either side. Everything else looks very soft and the background is very low contrast, meaning that the tones are of a limited range. My guess is that it is snowing and that the long exposure keeps the snow from showing against the foreground objects and makes it look like a blur in the background.
