Mentor Text Analysis — Balthazar

In the Adam Conover starts off the video by stating the topic of the video. He reads off quotes by people praising Patagonia for donating their shares to charity. Adam Conover then says his argument against the whole idea of donation. Conover uses storytelling by telling the story of Sam Walton, the founder of Walmart. Using this story to explain the illusion of a good and humble billionaire. The video has parts with suspenseful music and sound effects, the author also shows video clips and images of new headlines and articles. The video is broken down into seven segments. The intro sets the theme of the video, followed by Conover explaining what Patagonia is doing. He then finishes the second half of the video by talking about other billionaires who have done the same kind of ā€œdonatingā€ to increase their public image. The structure is intro, hook, stories, his argument against the topic and his conclusion. His primary audience is his YouTube subscribers. He concludes the video with a proposal to create a policy which would prevent people from gaining so much wealth. I think his message is that there are no goof billionaires, and the idea of a good billionaire is a marketing ploy. I would like to emulate the structure of the video; I think he had a good hook thatĀ kept the viewer engaged. I would avoid making this kind of video, where the person is talking and looking directly at the camera. I also would avoid trying to evoke a strong emotional response from the viewer.Ā

  1. Excellent! Full of insight and original thinking.

Q; Why do you think Conover’s direct gaze and his evoking of strong emotional response from viewer is not effective? What would you do differently?
