In the feature article, “‘Schools Are Killing Curiosity’: Why We Need to Stop Telling Children to Shut up and Learn,” Wendy Berliner tells us that educational systems need to be reformed in order to promote curiosity. Through research from the University of Michigan CS Mott Children’s Hospital and the Center for Human Growth and Development it has been found that children who are curios excel better at reading, math, and behavior. There is further research from Susan Engel, a professor of developmental psychology at Williams College in Williamstown, Massachusetts that as students progress in school levels, the students’ curiosity diminishes. Finally, a nursery school in England exchanged toys with cardboard boxes, tin cans, pots and pans, old phones, kettles in order to promote creativity and curiosity. Berliner provides to solve the issue of the poor educational system that does not promote curiosity.
