writing task mentor quote- Joami

“you were such a good student freshman and sophomore year what happened”

how could I forget these words that were constantly repeated by everyone throughout my four years of high school however my principal had the most impact because it felt serious. It was my senior year of high school and my principal had once again pulled me out of my class to talk with about my grades. This was different though it was usually a meeting with my counselors, and Teachers However, this time it was different it was just me and her. With a look of concern which never looked real, To me it was more about her curiosity to a question she had been asking for two years. I stared at her with a blank face because it wasn’t like I was going tell her the truth that I let two friends that backstabbed me complete make me hate school and loss all motivation. I would have rather her think I was just like these other kids who made friends and went downhill or that I was a bad student. She knew I was a very closed off and private person so she never pushed me to tell her but she would always bring it up. She had then called my favorite counselor Ms. perez in, which played a big part in me graduating. we then came up with a plan which helped me big time.

With this plan Ms. Perez pushed me and made sure I was doing what I had to do to graduate and end the year on a good note. She would call all my classes every period and ask if I was there, Had my teachers give her weekly updates, send her my work. She knew what had happen with me and the two girls and how bad my anxiety was after so she would also let me stay in her Office to do my work and help me if I needed. I will forever be grateful for her and my principal for helping me but specifically for Ms. Perez because really made my year and made what everyone thought was impossible to a Possibly. Even though it wasn’t part of her job to what seems like babysit me. She dealt with all my nonsense throughout the bad days and the good. At the end I ended up graduating and it was all thanks to them.

  1. Joami: This is good work! Glad that you are starting to post HW — Kudos to you!

Can you give more details on the setting of when the principal said the quote? Were you in the pricnipals’ office? What did that space look liike?

THen, how did you answer her? Think back and recreate your words in reply to her. Use quotation marks. Look to our class texts to see how writers write dialogue. RLW Read Like A Writer to learn how writers write dialogue!

You had people who really supported you, What a wonderful tribute to the principal and counselor who were behind you. As a writer, you have great examples of what Ms. Perez did to put you back on the right track. GOod that you listed specific examples of her actions.

NOW: I would like to hear what were your actions. What were you inner thoughts? Doubts? Resilient thoughts? What did you DO in tandem with (together with, or following Ms. Perez’s lead) to get yourselve out of the quicksand (my word! haha)

Also: learn how to put the exact words coming out of a person’s mouth, or the exact words in your inner thoughts into dialogue form with quotation marks. So the reader can HEAR, you the writer create THEATRE OF THE MIND for the audience, or your reader.

SO: She would call all my classe teachers every period and ask, “Is Joami in class? Can you give me a weekly update on her performance?”

IF you want to just report, then: Ms. Perez had my teachers give her weekly updates and send her my homework assignments.

I liked this part:  it was more about her curiosity to a question she had been asking for two years (so this means that she always believed you were capable of doing better). I stared at her with a blank face (good detail!) because it wasn’t like I was going tell her the truth that I let two friends that backstabbed me complete make me hate school and loss all motivation. I would have rather her think I was just like these other kids who made friends and went downhill or that I was a bad student.

    Best,

    Prof. Wu

PS I notice how you pay close attention and take notes and read aloud in class. Keep it up! 🙂 🙂 🙂
