NYCHA

NYCHA ,which stands for The New York City Housing Authority ,was founded in 1934 after the Great Depression during Fiorello H. LaGuardia’s time being mayor between 1934-1945. “The Great Depression was the worst economic downturn in the history of the industrialized world, lasting from the stock market crash of 1929 to 1939”. This led to low income for residents in New York City as well as the rest of the United States and also led to unemployment for the American people. NYCHA was the first organization in the world to provide low cost housing for people in the 5 boroughs of NYC. It brought a new style of living for people after the Great Depression. The first development was made in 1935 which was called the “First Houses”. It was located in the Lower East Side of Manhattan. It was made from apartments that were already there and was just renovated. Beginning as a private property , it was purchased by “eminent domain” which is the process of the state or government taking private property for the public to use. The Federal Housing Act of 1937 and 1949 helped to expand public housing and improved living conditions for low income families.
Here is what I would say to the mayor.Although there has been improvement , there are also some downfalls. Just recently on June 11,2018 , “U.S. Attorney Geoffrey Berman filed a lawsuit accusing NYCHA of violating health and safety regulations, exposing children to lead paint, and training its workers to deceive inspectors under the oversight of chairwoman Shola Olatoye from 2012 to 2016”. This accusation was brought up by NYCHA tenants who just want a stable living conditions for them and for their families if applicable . As the mayor I believe you should take note on these kind of things and try n help prevent further endangerment towards ur citizens.

Speaking towards the residents,As a people , we are usually judgemental without knowing or actually knowing. It’s a natural human thing. Living in NYC , some people are told that living in NYCHA you must have a low income (basically calling you broke and poor). Another example would be that your “ghetto” with intentions to stir the pot in that specific environment. As I was growing up , I always seen people in the residency and some people i know for a fact that they are gang affiliated which leads me to the reason why people expect you to fit that criteria because you live around those people on an everyday basis. From the article  “We The People: The Citizens of NYCHA in Photos + Words’ opens at the Brooklyn Historical Society” it states “The stereotype for someone who lives in public housing is you come from a single parent household. You’re on welfare. You’re involved in some type of elicit crime, probably drug dealer or on drugs,” said Washington, who lived in public housing in Washington, D.C. He says the stereotypes are untrue” For example , that’s just like saying because you live in a white neighborhood , your expected to adapt their culture which is not true. You can live in a place and keep your culture intacted and still come out of there without attachments from that environment. There is even a stereotype amongst the residents themselves. Some residents believe that they can’t make it out the residency due to economic factors or personal factors and decide to put in their mind to stay there and not progress which is also not true. Everyone has their opinions on each other when we should be focusing on bettering ourselves. So therefore together as a unit , residents will have a better outcome of living  if standing up together to help one another  rather than keeping quiet and shutting everyone out .

Dreams and Nightmares by Meek Mill is expressing how it was a struggle to live in the hood and much harder to become something. In the beginning of the song it says “I used to pray for times like this, to rhyme like this

So I had to grind like that to shine like this”. This brings out the fantasy of what he dreamed of and how it can become a reality. Which is probably why he titled his song Dreams and nightmares. “See my dreams unfold, nightmares come true

It was time to marry the game and I said, “Yeah, I do”

If you want it you gotta see it with a clear-eyed view” . The dreams are for starters trying to  get out the hood. When the “dream unfolds” it’s starting to fall in place and that’s when you start to progress. But also the nightmares won’t go away because you have dreams. You have to not only acknowledge them but face them as well.

Never let me down by Kanye west gives off that racism is an issue in society that people need to be more aware about! He starts off by saying “Racisms still alive, they just be concealin’ it

But I know they don’t want me in the damn club

They even make me show I.D to get inside of Sam’s club”. The act of Racism has been hidden from everyone but it can never be fully hidden because Kanye still feels these actions upon him. Out of everyone he’s the only one showing I.D to get into a club everyone should be able to walk right into. This makes him feel unwanted already and then he probably feels because he’s black they cause extra problems and give him a hard time. But he also knows his history and his background.

“I get down for my grandfather who took my momma

Made her sit in that seat where white folks ain’t want us to eat

At the tender age of 6 she was arrested for the sit in

And with that in my blood I was born to be different”. by having others go through what he goes through he realizes he needs to inform others about these racist acts through this song. He also admires the people who faced these cruel punishments . Some people probably wouldn’t even be able to handle that everyday. But nobody should be going through that at all.

Lose yourself by Eminem creates this statement on how you don’t need to think you just got to do it. “ His palms are sweaty, knees weak, arms are heavy

There’s vomit on his sweater already, mom’s spaghetti

He’s nervous, but on the surface he looks calm and ready

To drop bombs, but he keeps on forgettin’

What he wrote down, the whole crowd goes so loud

He opens his mouth, but the words won’t come out”. There’s a bunch of lines here explaining what happens when you overthink. Eminem shows what it can do to you and how it can effect you. But he also lets us know that it can only effect you if you let it get to you. If you know how to do something there’s nothing you should be afraid of. “You better lose yourself in the music, the moment

You own it, you better never let it go

You only get one shot, do not miss your chance to blow

This opportunity comes once in a lifetime”. This reveals what happens when you just do rather than planning on a perfect move. Nobody can “boo” you if you don’t allow them to. Eminem is basically saying to not give anybody the opportunity to shun you out. You have to believe in yourself and have the confidence to do what is necessary.

Dear mama by 2Pac talks about what his mom goes threw ”You always was committed a poor single mother in welfare tell me how ya did it” by saying these particular words it shows that he views his mother as a strong women and how 2Pac admires her. ” The road got rough your alone your trying to raise two bad kids” by her doing that by herself it taught her how to be more independent her path had ups and downs but mainly downs because she had plenty of issue when it came to money which is the reason why she was struggling

Energy by drake explains how his positivities is being drained by people that have negativity “got a lotta enemies got a lotta people trying to drain me of this energy” drake demonstrates that people with lot of hate comes after the people that have positive energy. He also feel people personally attack him because of the best energy he has “I bought this one a truck

I bought this one a house, I bought this one a mall” this is an example of his generosity by him getting people what they want or need it shows how kind and thoughtful he his most people probably wouldn’t even attempt to do the things he has done

Lucid dreams by Juice wrld  expresses his feeling about a girl that hurt him and how he mix feelings for that girl “Can’t take back the love that I gave you It’s to the point where I love and I hate you” he express he gave this girl so much love and it’s to the point he can’t take back because he had so much love for her and at the same time he hates her because she cheated on him “You found  another one, but I am the better one

I won’t let you forget me” he also explains since she replaced him he saying I’m the better than your new and he doesn’t want her to forget him when she is with her new boyfriend

hip hop music

hip hop is a music genre that allows artists to express themselves  specifically African Americans when it comes this type of music.  In the song called  “Never let me down” by Jay z and Kanye West it goes into detail about how the black history has made them into the men they are today. all the struggles and hardships that their families went through for generations developed the strength for them to work more harder to gain accessories that they want. its almost like their motivation is coming from pain and suffering which is kind of ironic. usually pain will make u feel more down about something rather thank persuade you to do more and go harder for what you want.

I’m apart of a program called the Liberty Partnership Program, and what they do is prepare you for your future. In this program They’ve allowed me to see what my strong suits were and what I need to work on. At the time I was quite the shy type which by the way I still am. Even though I know how to read out loud or answer a question I choose not to simply because I don’t like to speak. There’s nothing wrong with me I just rather be quiet. Knowing that, they decided to have me go out of my comfort zone and read a mini speech, which wasn’t a problem except for the part where they had me reading this little passage constantly out loud to the top of my lungs . My god that was so annoying and awfully frustrating. It felt like no matter how loud I get it just doesn’t seem to be enough because I have to keep starting over again. It’s funny because I usually don’t sweat but that day my body was  reacting all types of ways. Some of which I didn’t even think I would ever feel. Like scared to get it wrong or shocked that I didn’t get it right after the second time or even maybe more so breathing heavy while reading again and again and again . It was just so stressful. There I was reading, which my voice was pretty vocal, clear enough for everyone to hear, well so I thought , and then poof an unusual comment had come my way. “Start over and project your voice louder”. In my head I’m like what is wrong with this lady I know she heard me. But it’s whatever I simply continued to read. After the second time again with the nonsense “read it again take your hands out of your pockets”. Now that was just ridiculous. Like seriously my hands in my pockets is why I need to read again? I was starting to get really pissed off . So for the rest of the time they had me rereading I had that look where it was like “yeah this lady is crazy” kind of look.she couldn’t be serious. That had to be one of the worst things I had to do when it came to reading. What kind of person would put a child through such anxiety and hardships? Shouldn’t that be illegal? That felt completely unfair to me. Having me read countless amount of times knowing how I am about speaking and knowing how uncomfortable that feels. Have you ever got that feeling where you had to read out loud and it feels like you were never going to stop reading, because it felt like you had endless words to spit out from that huge brain of ours. They really thought I was capable of completing that task? Yeah Ight. I doubted myself more believe it or not when I found of the little paragraph was a tongue twister. That was when I really lost it. The confidence started to fade , my projection vanished, and my will for reading was coming to an end . Which quite frankly I already knew I wouldn’t like to read off of my boredom but this just made my bad thoughts on it even worse.Â
