Immigration

About two years ago, my sister registered herself in the military. There have been stories coming out about many families having being split apart, and it’s been happening for years, and there have been protests, however, it’s mostly a problem for the Latino/Hispanic community and little to know about other races/ethnicities and that’s why it isn’t a big topic in the U.S. With immigration, there are so many different problems and situations affecting everyone in the country and so many different policies and programs depending on various circumstances and government policies made by the president and ICE. Not everything involving immigration is relevant to the news and that’s a big problem, such as this issue regarding those immigrants that have children that voluntarily signed up to be in the U.S Military and now have to be deported and separated from them. The only person that has the right to change any laws or policies regarding the military or immigration is the Commander in Chief, the President of this term. I chose to write a letter to him because it was an appropriate way from him to receive my message, I explained what my thoughts were regarding the issue and what the issue with his decision to revoke a policy that semi-helped immigrants stay in the country, The reason why I said semi is because it wasn’t all that effective either but it was the best thing to help those immigrants with a little more time. I explained to him the research I found and how revoking this policy is unfair and has to be recognized only because there are people fighting for you and this country and now you’re taking away their family and separating them. I went to explaining a societal impact that deportation has on communities and how global migration can affect our country in the future, that research was from Ted Talk. Speaking and sending out my message might convince or show him another side of the perspective of this nation wide issue and this may allow him to review a new policy that him and many other important figures of the military. My other audience is mostly focused on the Latino/Hispanic community along with the small percentage of other races and ethnicities that are mixed into this same issue. Now is the time to speak up all together, many people might not be aware of this situation because it doesn’t regard many others, however, sending out my message in a speech is a perfect way to be heard around many others that understand. It gives a chance for many others to hear about the issue and stick together because the more people that enforce a problem, it will be heard sooner or later. Stating the facts and telling the stories of many others will get attention and it might lead to a change.

Letter

Dear Commander in Chief,

This letter is concerning the deportation of immigrants in the United States of America. You might think you already know what you need to know in making the decision in forcing millions of immigrants to be removed, however, I am writing this letter to further educate you about the issues in the small communities you might not be aware of. I would like to remind you what this country was built on, immigrants, throughout the past century millions of immigrants have been entering this country in search for a better life, not only to leave their own country but to work and voluntarily take those jobs that other citizens wouldn’t take, and to have a family, that those children become more educated and have the opportunity to be successful. Many of those children grow up to make the decision to join the military. In an article I was able to find statistics using data from the U.S. Census Bureau that shows information based on the immigrant veteran population focusing on ethnic background. “The racial and the ethnic composition of foreign-born veterans is much more diverse than that of U.S.-Born veterans”, meaning the amount of diversity in the military is increasing compared to how it was years ago, having mostly native-born or white. “Among U.S.-born Hispanic and Asian/Pacific Islander veterans, significant shares came from immigrant families: 57 percent of native-born Asian/Pacific Islander veterans and 46 percent of U.S.-born Hispanic veterans had at least one immigrant parent.” The significant amount of people that join the military also have an immigrant parent in the household, keep this in mind. I am aware that your intention is to “Scale back a program that protects undocumented family members or active-duty troops from being deported,” and that Parole in place, the name of this program, helps immigrants be placed in one-year increments if they are a primary family member, however, that is not enough because only a limited amount of immigrants will have this protection but again only in under rare circumstances, even if granted, it only allows them to adjust their immigration status to only stay in the U.S temporarily. Margaret Stock, an immigrant attorney, who represents recruits and veterans in deportation proceedings say “It’s going to create chaos in the military”. An immigrant attorney made a statement that, “The troops can’t concentrate on their military jobs when they’re worried about their family members being deported”, what would this mean in future references knowing troops are out in other countries risking their lives protecting this country, while they are fighting for this country, this country is betraying them and removing their families away from them. It’s important for you to understand what message your sending the country and also the impact it has on the soldier emotionally, listening to Ted Talk, a guest speaker Duarte Geraldino talked about the missing information we choose not to see when it comes to debate about immigration and it’s something I think you should listen to. He talks about the social circles that immigrants have around the communities and how it can affect society and the country as a whole as deportation increases. He studied global migration went on to say, “When the social circles are weakened, a country itself is weaker. Rather than focusing on individuals, we should focus on the circles around them, because these are the people who are left behind; the voters, the taxpayers, the ones who are suffering this loss. And it’s not just the children of the departed who are impacted. You have brothers and sisters who are separated by borders. You have classmates, teachers, law enforcement officers, technologists, scientists, doctors who are all scrambling to make sense of new realities when their social circles are broken.” This will soon impact you, the country was built on immigrants, having them removed would have some sort of effect on the country whether it’s economically or socially, it is you job to take charge of this country and make it better. I want you to understand the issues that come with you making the decision of you wanting to withdraw a program that helps immigrants in this nature or not even considering to try and make another program that help immigrants. This is an important issue in our communities, and to those serving in the military, that help this country. If you were to consider changing your mind, my goal is to pass a program, or act, maybe even an actual law to help any immigrant stay in the U.S with those primary family members in the military, deployed or not. I’m speaking out to you because you are the only one that can make a great change like this and help hundreds of thousands of immigrants stay here creating a better life for their children as well as seeing their young ones serve in the military and protect this country.

Speech

I want to speak about an important issue that I am concerned with as well as the Latino/Hispanic community and so many other immigrants that will soon see a resolution, as its my goal to see a change in the future. As parents, we should be proud that our children have committed themselves to the military to protect and serve this country. As parents, we should be able to stay as close to those soldiers as possible, they can be deployed at any time and them leaving is not a good experience, but the fact is, we are excited to see them come back. These soldiers go and fight for this country, they expect to return home to their families. How can that happen when there are hundreds of thousands of immigrants being deported. There are millions of undocumented immigrants in this country and many others that have a temporary stay, which goes by fast and it’s very difficult to regain that paper in time for that expiration date. The issue is, there’s many immigrant parents that have their children in the military and yet they face the tragedy of being forced to be removed from the country. Here are the facts, “Additionally, almost 1.9 million veterans are the U.S.-born children of immigrants. Together, the 2.4 million veterans of immigrant origin, either because they themselves are immigrants or are the children of immigrants, account for 13 percent of all veterans,” cited by a migration information source, these are the statistics of those in the military and their origin, that much can be shortened down to hundreds of thousands of immigrants having to leave and those all have someone serving in the military. We are lucky enough to have a policy that can help families, the Parole In Place, which allows military family members, who can not adjust their immigration status, to stay in the U.S temporarily. The objective was to minimize disruption to the life of a Soldier, Sailor, Airman or Marine, if a soldier was deployed, they wouldn’t have to worry about their parents being deported. The trump administration wants to scale back this program that protects undocumented family members of active-duty troops from being deported as well has declining all questions to discuss the reasoning of ending this program. Carlos Luna, founder and president of a green card veteran chapter of the League of Latin American Citizens, said the ending of parole in place is yet another example of what he called the Trump administration’s “war against immigrants”, “There are fewer and fewer opportunities for these people serving the country and their veteran family to go through the ‘legal channels’ and stay here in the country, which for many is the only place they’ve ever known,” Luna said. How can we let this go by, even in the future, many more policies could be revoked. However, as much as this is a huge complication for many immigrants that this can help, this isn’t as effective as what many would think, these protections are only available under rare circumstances. I believe the intentions of creating this policy is just but the variables that allow some immigrants to be granted of this policy is unlimited and unfair “In the last several years, Parole in Place has been used sparingly, and has not protected all of the dependents of service members from deportation. The federal agency responsible for all adjudication of immigration cases does not track the number of waivers or deportations of service members or their dependents that it has processed.” Many are aware of the circumstances that comes along with it, but many can’t take advantage. My position here is to push forward and stop the withdrawal of the immigration policy that supports those with primary family members in the military and better that policy making it more effective and taken advantage of. To be heard. To educate many that aren’t aware of this, families should not be ripped apart and we need to make some changes to immigration policies.

Historical Movies

My genre was based on historical movies that portray significant events in history that made a big change in a specific place or to a large population. All sources shared concepts that the directors all wanted to demonstrate to the audience. In this genre, it’s taking an historical event and bringing it into a film to help the audience visualize the event that was a big part of history which is one thing all sources had, such as visual effects to create the imagery of what actually occurred during that time. Another thing was the effort made into the scripts, all directors and writers of the films read many historical books or researched any knowledge based on the event. If there were important figures, they are studied, to bring that person alive and to show the audience what that person was like in real life. All sources wanted the films to be accurate so then the audience not only enjoy the movie but also obtain more knowledge about the event and the impact it had on others in the past. In each film, directors use characters to connect more to the event, such as creating emotional appeals, so it is easier for the audience to compare themselves to that situation because the reason to have this particular genre is to put the audience in the movie and for them to get an understanding of what it was like, whether it was something terrible that had to be changed, a political issue in which people were affected, or an event that changed the way people lived. For all the films in the beginning, it’s more of an understanding of the background and throughout the movie, the characters get into complications that they go through in their own way and the audience sees that for each event, under different circumstances, people like them had to go through situations for a long period of time.

I learned that directors study for months about a specific event before trying to start filming, and writing the script can be stressful because of all the facts within the event that have to be accurate. Even watching the movies itself, I learned more about the historical time period. Another concept of making these kinds of genres is the fact that because historical movies are usually popular, directors try to demonstrate the negativity of the event to stop history from repeating itself. If there were movies based on politics, the negativity from the movie shows the audience what had happened before and how it impacted people, and the big picture to make sure our society does not end up in the same situation again. What I would still want to learn more is how directors put everything together, from all the knowledge about the historical event and the personal issues of the characters that are well put together, I like how historical movies are thought and planned out.

From this assignment I learned about writing more of an analysis, which happened to be a little difficult because I had to take different films and provide a well thought out explanation/analysis to describe how this particular movie connects with the idea of directors wanting to put a historical event into film and to demonstrate to the audience of the impact. It was a lot of explaining that I had to connect together to form a bigger analysis, which is something I never learned in high school. My strengths would have to be planning out first, having an outline to organize my ideas and format it as well as possible. In a way, I am aware of how to write an analysis in a correct way, writing specific parts for my paper was easy for me, when I’m able to get a clear idea of what I’m writing about I am able to explain myself without having difficulty. For the movies I had to find out what the main purpose was, what the outcome of the film that the directors wanted to portray was and connect to it the whole idea of the genre, what it’s purpose was, that format I had to keep for each source was something that was not difficult. I would like to learn more about the different types of writing there is, the annotated bibliography was new to me, but it opened my mind up and helped me learn how to connect my ideas together to get my main point out. After reading comments based on my paper, rewriting or fixing any analysis from any of my sources would be a good way of growing as a writer.

Historical Movies

Nataly Azcatl

The Boy In Striped Pajamas. Directed by Mark Herman, MiraMax Films, BCC Films, 2008.

“The Boy In Striped Pajamas” directed by Mark Herman re-creates the setting of the halocaust, a young boy, Bruno, who’s father is in charge of a concentration camp not to far from their home, explores through the woods and finds a young Jewish boy, Shumel, his age inside the camp. They become friends and Bruno finds out more about the camp as days continue of him visiting the Jewish boy on the other side of a wired fence. This film’s audience is directed to anyone, except those who are unable to view any violence throughout the movie. Although it’s a more serious film, it appeals to many people because it happened, the environment in the movie did happen and the series of cruel events towards Jewish people back then were true. The director tries to put the audience in the perspective of Bruno, throughout the movie you see the confusion of the boy believing that all of the Jews in the camp are farmers, he finds Shumel in the “striped pajamas” and notices his hunger and lack of personal hygiene he’s displaying. He notices all the anti-Semitic propaganda from his family and others when he isn’t by the camp. Towards the end of the movie, the director tries to persuade the audience to feel and act a certain way about this event, when Bruno says to Shumel “We’re not supposed to be friends, you and me. We’re supposed to be enemies. Did you know that?”, you notice the innocence involved with the social expectations in the time and place. Bruno decides to cut the fence and join Shumel inside the camp, still unaware of the horrors waiting for him, they enter the camp not knowing they are headed into a gas chamber, Bruno telling Shumel right before their lives are being taken that he was his best friend.

12 Years A Slave. Directed by Steve McQueen, Film4 Productions, 2013.

“12 years a Slave” was first made as an 1853 memoir written by American Solomon Northup who was born in the North identified as free but kidnapped and sold into slavery in the South before the Civil War. The director, Steve McQueen, read the book and wanted to adapt it into a film, he wanted to teach more about what slavery was and the impact it had, not only on one person but the hundreds of people that weren’t even identified as people because of their color. This serious film touches the audience’s heart because of this particular man’s story, the environment, setting and time period he had to live through shows inhumane ways people lived their lives. Through the movie, Solomon is beaten, chained, stripped down and forced to work for white people in their plantations, he is put through all those gruesome experiences but he never lost hope in finding his family again. The director tries to demonstrate how Afterican Americans were treated, how it affected their lives and how it was part of American history, he also demonstrates the mental impact of those people and it captures the audience’s attention because it did happen and it was a way of living back then. Some scenes become explicit and the director wants that in the film to get a reaction from the audience, an example in the movie was when an owner decided to punish one of the slaves he owned but he chose Solomon to whip one of them which he considered his friend, you then see how cruel and inhumane things were back then and it definitely catches the audience’s attention to see the history that actually happened and that it shouldn’t be forgotten.

Dunkirk. Directed by Christopher Nolan, Syncopy Inc. 2017

“Dunkirk” directed by Christopher Nolan is taken place during World War II in France. Germany was able to trap Allied troops on the beaches of Dunkirk troops slowly and methodically try to evacuate with all the resources they can find during the massive operation involving vessels became a turning point for the Allied War effort. This particular movie is known as a silent film and is noticed by its lack of dialogue, the director tries to put the audience in the scenes. In a specific scene, hundreds of soldiers are in a naval ship believing they are going home, however the ship was bombed and you see how it goes down very quickly and the director wants to portray how it would be like to be trapped in that small space with hundreds of other soldiers and once the ships goes down its pitch black. It shows the fears that someone would have with the little amount of time to think or react, the audience can really get a full visual of what war did look it, in its horrible state, many soldiers were close to death and the audience can feel that while watching. Throughout American History, there have been many wars that lasted years with battles in between, any audience has the knowledge already for what war was like, but film directors try to take into a visual effect and show you instead of an audience imagining what it would be like.

Lincoln. Directed by Steven Spielberg, 20th Century Fox, 2012

“Lincoln” directed by Steven Spielberg takes time during Lincoln’s presidency and portrays the time of the civil war. During his time, it was considered historical because of his struggles to end the war and abolish slavery to pass the 13th Amendment by the House of Representatives in 1865. This film is about politics and the world’s greatest democracy and it shows the audience how the government was run before. Throughout the movie, you get to understand more of Lincoln’s personal life and what his goals for the nation was. Lincoln was one of the most recognized presidents because of what he was able to accomplish and the director wanted the audience to see that, in the film you see all the complications he had to go through and you see his ambitions for the country and what it would mean to pass the 13th amendment. Although, there have been other presidents that have done significant things in their time, Lincoln was a president that cared deeply about the nation and wanted to show everyone else what the nation was built on and what it was attended for and how peace is what the nation needs to become the greatest. The director tries to capture this time period and turn it into film for the intention of the audience to see why this specific historical was important and how it helped form the nation that we live in today.

The Book Thief. Directed by Brian Percival. Fox 2000 Pictures, 2013.

“The Book Thief” directed by Brain Percival, is during the time period of World War II in Germany but actually focuses more on the impact of the civilians in a neighborhood near a war zone, instead of the soldiers fighting in the war. A little girl, Liesel, is welcomed home to her new foster parents, Hans and Rosa. Hans notices that she is unable to read and that she is almost ten years old, he then tries to help her with that and also acknowledge her about what is happening, since it was the Nazi Era, he explains to her what she should and shouldn’t do to stay out of the trouble and be careful with her surroundings while she walks to school and also has to be taught emergency procedures, such as hiding in an underground bunker, because of the war that was close by them. One day out of the ordinary, Hans brings home a young man to the house and Liesel notices how Hans makes him stay in a room, out of sight. She soon realizes that he is a Jewish man and that if anyone where to found out he was there, everyone would be in trouble. The director tries to show the audience what is was like for parents to teach their teach children about what was happening around them in that time period which is obviously completely different from now. Children back then had trouble learning and it affected them at an age where they should have already known, you notice in the film how innocence is taken away from the children because they must be aware of what’s happening and how life for them in a time of war is completely different from children now, where there is no war and children go to school at a young age and get the education they need. Not only for children but for everyone else too, there were many social rules because it was the Nazi Era and soldiers would be able to come in and search into people’s homes if they wanted to, people were scared to be approached by them and it really effected how people had to act and to the audience watching this film, you get an understanding how different circumstances can effect people. The director tries to open people’s minds to how society was back then and anywhere across the world.

Selma. Directed by Ava DuVernay. Paramount Pictures, 2015

“Selma” directed by Ava DuVernay, is based on true events of Martin Lucther King Jr. forming a political march which led to a significant event in the American Civil Rights movement and helped pass the Voting Rights Act of 1965. In the south, discrimation made it hard for African Americans to vote, a match was made in protest for President Lyndon Johnson to sign the act. On March 7, 1965, Martin Luther King leds thousands of people in a non violent protest from Selma to Montgomery, Alabama, which happened to be 5 days and was known as a 54 mile walk. In the film, you are witnessing what the match was like for these people and what setbacks had happened to them, such as when crossing the Edmund Pettus Bridge, the March was stopped by a blockade of state troopers, they were told to stop the march and when the people refused, they fought back with clubs and tear gas. King then began announcing help on telegrams to reach out to all religious leaders in joining the peaceful protest they wanted. There was so much that happened during this time, it was a big historical event because of the number of people that joined it and the number of people that had been sacrificed to get the act to be passed. The director tries to show the audience that it’s not just about the problem that African Americans had, but the injustice of the law and that it was affecting what the nation was supposed to be. Many directors try to re visit events like this that have affected a lot of people at the time and show people about the past and what it would feel like to be in an event that was important to history. A great way to obtain historical knowledge is throw film representation, it can show the audience the success, mistakes and failures made in the past that can help create a better society.

That one writing assignment

When I was younger I felt real low about myself in school. I never really thought of myself as a reader or writer. The teacher would try to facilitate discussions and I just couldn’t comprehend what the other kids were saying. Throughout middle school and most of high school I hated reading and I hated writing. Why is that? We had to read certain books that was a part of the “curriculum” the school had, everyone knows that. It was like I had to read a book and understand all the metaphors and the ideas of what the author wanted us to know. Listening to all the kids talking and going into depth of a book that meant nothing to me was kind of the start of me hating to read or write.

After that came essays we all had to write every single time and there was always a specific thing we had to write about and find details to support it and if you wrote something wrong you got a bad grade, obviously. There was always instructions to write essays and maybe that was the reason why I hated it so much, the writing part. Not only that but it was like my writing was so terrible, every time I got my paper back, there was so many grammar mistakes I didn’t see. Also getting a lot of comments back from my teachers about how my sentences didn’t make sense through some and most of my middle and high school.

During my Junior year, I had an english teacher that was so passionate about teaching students how to write well,  she really wanted us to get used to writing well for college. Writing essays was different with her, she always gave us options in what we, the class, wanted and what we were comfortable with.

Yea that’s definitely when my perspective on writing changed. Also, my writing itself got better, I no longer had a ton of comments from my teachers what was wrong about my writing and it felt good. It was like taking baby steps and I didn’t realize how my writing got better throughout the year. This class helped me to continue writing my essays better.

During Senior year, I took classes that were college level to prepare myself for actual college. Surprising I had like a writing awakening sort of thing which actually came from my science college course. We were watching a movie about the Soviet Union and it’s time around there and the assignment was to write a three page essay on the movie. It was that kind of writing like a movie critic. I honestly don’t think I had ever worked so hard on an essay before, I guess because it was a college class I had to up my game. At first I was so anxious about how the paper would trim out, I saw that movie three times before I actually started writing and just going back to specific scenes here and there. Of course there was a prompt but it was really vague, just comparing that time period to this time period. I worked on it a couple of days until about one in the morning just writing and rewriting and fixing grammar and all that. After watching it so many times I thought that maybe I overdid it, but in my head Iknew this was going to be worth it. While writing it, I felt so proud of myself that I was able to accomplish a big assignment like that.

When I got that paper back, right on top was a one hundred and a small smile. I looked through the pages and had no comments and when I saw the rubric all it said was “perfect paper”. This moment felt like the greatest achievement I had ever done in my educational years and yet all it was just one assignment.

Not only did he write that on my paper, my teacher had said “ there was only one paper that got a one hundred, I didn’t have to write anything, it was perfectly written, the best paper I have ever read in my whole life of teaching”. In my head I finally got the feedback from the teacher I wanted for my writing.

He said “Nataly you did an amazing job”.

In my head I thought it was someone else in another class even though I got a one hundred because I never had that kind of complement in my life. But no he said “Nataly you did an amazing job”. What a weird feeling to feel a type of way because of a writing assignment.

Sandra Cisneros, “Only Daughter” Hw

This story was very interesting to me for a couple of reasons. To me when I read that her father only wanted her to look for a husband instead of an education, that surprised me because it’s completely different from today. It maybe was just her family that felt a way about young spanish girls back then. You can tell from reading this that he expected more from his sons then her. For me, my parents want my sisters and me to put education first and I know a other people that feel the same way in their families. It was really great that she got education though, that writing was kind of a passion for her. You can tell that she just wanted approval from her father and that is completely normal and when she finally got it after writing her own book, she must have felt accomplished. What I didn’t understand was why he changed his mind, obviously she wrote a book so he would be proud but before he stated that her father believed that the education she got was a waste of time. This was a short story and yet somehow I feel like she summarized her life story.
