Last week I was not able to attend the Zoom meeting but I was able to do the readings and get some insight from those. I was also able to get answers from two more professors from City Tech about orientation materials. Michael Cannetti said he doesn’t have anything related to orientation materials but mentioned here are flyers outside of the CLT office P113 in the Pearl Building. Sara Woolley says she has a slide deck for students but it’s not aimed for freshman students. I will have to reconnect with Woolley to get more information on that slide deck.

After reading “Milestones in the history of thematic cartography, statistical graphics, and data visualization” I read that the history of data visualization can be connected with other fields such as technology and statistical graphics. In general the digital age brought us a ton of data and data science into analysis. The other parts of the article talks about the importance of maps and diagrams and how the earliest forms of visualization can be traced to geometric and navigation maps. Overall it discusses the transformation and evolution of maps from drawing them to using computers to digitally organize data.

I was able to talk to my group when I got back and we decided to do a scavenger hunt app for new students to find spots on campus such as important offices, rooms and resources. We thought creative a scavenger hunt app would be the most helpful for students and freshman students. Everyone is on their phone and reading the 24 best scavenger hunt ideas for students it brought up good points to why it might be the best option. It mentions how you don’t even need to use paper and pencils you can just use this app Scavify. Using the app you can automatically track points and share results and the game via QR code. Using our phones and also having a scavenger hunt can help with student interaction and that is something we want for freshman.
