Homework #3

The part that affected me the most to understand this reading was the vocabulary and the way of expressing the idea. I think that from the beginning the reading was a bit boring and with a lot of information at the same time. When I mentioned Trujillo for the first time in the reading, I was pleased that he took out a separate paragraph to explain how this dictator influenced the history of the Dominican Republic. some words were a bit difficult to understand because I had to use the dictionary several times to understand the reading. For example, the name Fuku was used several times in the reading and even though I kept reading I could not understand the meaning of the name. I liked how I mix the words of English and Spanish for me it was easier to understand what was happening when I read a word in Spanish.

Homework #2__ Keysha Lopez

In the article “You are already an author” by Mike Bunn the author is trying to demonstrate by giving this title that you are already an author but from your own life. all the decisions we make have consequences. I always believed that “our destiny is written.” but we are the ones who decided how to write that destiny.

In the app on my phone you can find “notes” whenever I feel bad or discouraged for any particular reason I like to write what I feel. I think that when I write with pencil and paper I can vent more because words weigh more to write than a simple touch on a keyboard or a phone screen. But writing helps me find out who I am and helps me calm down in my difficult times.

During the years that I have studied, I have written many spells but you can count on the fingers of my hands the spells that I have had to write about myself as a writer. During my four years of high school, I spent writing argumentative essays and nothing else. Then in my first semester of college things changed and I like to share and transmit a little of my life to the reader. But everything that I added during the last years was necessary to know what I know today. I will need everything that I studied at some point in my life. On the other hand, Something that would like do similar to Buun is to start the essay with quotes.  Something that I would like to do differently is that instead of being a quotation of a leader that is one of the great composers of music. I think it would be interesting to start writing an essay with a phrase from a piece of music that connects what the essay is about.

Keysha Lopez_ Homework#1

My name is Keysha Yokayra Lopez Alcantara. Yes, as you can see, it is very long. But behind that names are nice stories and reasons why I have it. In the beginning, my grandmother wanted her to call me Rocio because hers, two of her granddaughters, had natural names like “Nieves” which in English means snow, and my other cousin is called “Lluvia” which means rain in English. My grandmother wanted to put dew on me because it was like a compliment to rain, snow, and dew. But unfortunately, my mom never liked that name for me. My mom always liked the name Keysha because it was a name that was very similar to hers. My parents agreed because my first name does not look much like my father’s, so they decided to give me Yokayra as my middle name. Yes, I know that nowadays middle names are not used but I love my name. I received a lot of criticism from many family members because they say that Yokayra is a very long name. but I really like my name. Although nobody calls me by my middle name a lot, only people who know me well know my middle name. I like to have the names my parents gave me. I remember that when I got here to the United States they said my name wrong and they still do it because of the pronunciation. because my name sounds totally different in English than in Spanish. and I like it much more in Spanish. every time someone says my name wrong I like to correct it because I like to be called by the name that my parents gave me.

I know the importance of a name but in my opinion, I don’t think a name can identify you, because nowadays there are many people who don’t like their name. They grow up with the name that their parents gave them and last with a name that they are not comfortable having for years. Behind each name comes a story and that has to be repeated. The irony of my story is that my mother named my sister Elysha and when we arrived in this country I had my first pet named Alysha. as you can see they have the same ending with the “Sha” Elysha, Keysha, and Laysha. Behind my name, many more names of  my Family members  were created.
