Unit 3 Outline & Mentor Text

I did not create a script for my expose video, because I want my delivery to be as natural as possible and not robotic. However, I’ve created an outline on what I want to discuss, and what images and/or videos I want to include.

Introduction

  1. Introduce myself and the topic I will discuss.
  2. Give a general overview of what American schools teach children regarding Northern History in a point of view where I pretend to believe it.
  3. Include another point of view that goes against the one I originally claimed.
  4. Set foreshadowing as to what will be talked about in the video

 Whitewashed Lies

  1. Explain how slavery was taught in schools, the difference between the north and south.
  2. Introduce the truth of slavery in the north. (Provide sources; images and/or videos)
  3. Give background to segregation.
  4. Discuss where it originated and the North’s stance on it. (Provide sources; images and/or videos)

Conclusion

  1. Brief summary on what was talked about during video
  2. Include my insight on what was explained.
  3. Consider how it is detrimental to young black kids and why it needs to change.

Video(s) I Want To Display (still looking for more)

Black family tried to move to all-White neighborhood in Rosedale, Queens (1976) – HARD TO WATCH https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4hfJ2WV6M0M&t=189s

Mentor Text

D’Angelo Wallace is a commentary Youtuber. The premise of his videos surround the drama that exist on the platform. I would say his audience consists of high schoolers to college students. Although he discusses Youtube drama, I do believe that he would be interested in my topic, solely because it’s commentary based as well.

His commentary videos are lengthy, so it’s similar to a documentary. He breaks down each video into different parts. He starts from the beginning and ends with the present. Because he is so detailed in his videos, its really enjoyable to watch because he isn’t missing anything important and it allows his viewers to fully grasp what’s being discussed.

He uses any type of source that is relevant to the video he’s making. If he wants to touch up on a point, he’ll mainly include videos of the person he’s talking about. Or if the situation is based on he say she say, he provides tweets, text messages, screenshots, etc.

Annoying ways people use resources

As per my understanding after reading this source by Kyle Stedman, he basically saying that how students or just writers, in general, do not really use quotation or I would say “forget” to simplify in their own words. They just paraphrase what the author says and don’t define it in their own words. Like how Stedman has said on page 253 that “when I believe I’m not patchwriting, I am simply doing is so expertly that seams are no longer visible” and one more ” I understand that I couldn’t tell…..I swear I did some research! see? here’s a citation right here!”These quotes define how they simply re-write whatever the author has already written and said that they didn’t “re-write” if they have a cite but that’s not enough. People have to put their own interpretations too and just putting quotes at the end Doesn’t really prove their writing and did consider plagiarism. There are two of my favorite quotes that I want to use but I just use one from the article about how high taxes were really killing minorities that “New Deal taxes were major job destroyers during the 1930s, prolonging unemployment that averaged 17%. Higher business taxes meant that employers had less money for growth and jobs.” This quote is one of my favorites because it defines how minorities and colored people were targeted in this deal and rich “privileged” people didn’t really have to worried about anything. It made me sad that they were the ones who had to pay taxes on pretty much everything and yet didn’t receive benefits compare to whites and minorities still got low wages than whites whereas they’ve done more work.

Resources

While reading the article I was able to learn a few things for example the more you accept the pickiness of readers the more your writing can be changed where people can actually get the point that you are trying to prove.  I was also able to know what a convention was a particular way that something is done in the text he says ” Notice that I’m not saying that there’s a particular right or wrong way to use convention in my writing—if the modern U.S. academic system had evolved from a primarily African or Asian or Latin American cultural consciousness instead of a European one, conventions for writing would probably be very different. That’s why they’re conventions and not rules”.  I never though that deep when it came to reading or writing. I have a few  quotes that I had used in my unit three writing and ones of them came to mind when I was reading the article and it was from a Ted Talk spoken by Terri Orbuch and she was talking about differentiating love from lust and as she was explaining the difference I was very surprised at what I was hearing because there are so many ways that heart break could have been prevented. While describing love in a relationship I started to realize how much I don’t really see the signs in the relationships that I have seen around me , one of the signs was ” Love is when  you guys are intertwined and no longer just about one person its we” , the reason why this quote touched me is because of the fact that in relationships today you hear the couple talk more about the significant other by themselves and not about the both of them together being that they are in this together.  Because like people say there is no I in team.
