Research Question:”how does the media influence our ideas of implicit bias, especially when it comes to ideas of race and criminality.”

Example : Black Lives Matter movement

Part 1

Smith, R., 2020. Rob Smith: Black Lives Matter Doesn’T Really Care About Black Lives Lost Unless Group Can Blame Police. [online] Fox News. Available at: <https://www.foxnews.com/opinion/black-lives-matter-protests-rob-smith> [Accessed 9 September 2020].

Part 2a.

Author Rob Smith reports the issues of black lives matter in his eyes. He calls the movement a cult. While he does express his opinions on the movement as a whole he does it in a way in which down plays the whole African American group as a whole. He explains that the black live matter movement is considered as a “gang” and is considered as a completely dangerous movement. As a result he believes that this movement should be banned due to the people within the movement who are acting “irrational” and in his eyes are making the black community look bad.

Part2b

In this Fox News video O’Reilly sits down and talks to the audience about how black individuals are the ones who are out of control. He talks about black individuals being the real killers and how the black lives matter movement is a movement in which is destroying communities. He later goes  on to justify the killings of these unarmed victims of the black individuals being that they are he real threat. He then also goes on to basically say that ” white individuals are the ones who are getting killed more by police officers” which is his way of convincing the audience tat the black lives matter movement is overdramatic and dangerous. He then show a clip in which black live matter protestors go into a place and shout black lives matter. He gave a example in which would have the audience believe in what he is saying.

Part 3a.

Author Rob Smith is a black individuals who works for Fox News, and tries to help make a mockery of the black lives matter movement as a whole.  Throughout the article Smith calls the Black lives matter movement a cult instead of what it really is. He goes on to give the black lives matter movement a bad rep defending the whole group as violent when there are plenty people within the movement who act non-violently. Also he allows others who are looking in to believe that black individuals should be seen as violent. This goes to show how media is something in which can tarnish  a persons mindset on a specific group of people. Media is something in which can affect the way a person think especially when they rely on a certain type of website or Channel to get their news from. For example if a individuals is to rely on Fox News to gain knowledge on what is going on in the world right now. They will receive certain information in which can shift their views especially if they haven’t interacted with individuals outside of their group. Rob Smith gives a bad image to a group of people who are fighting as of today for the rights. The black lives matter movement on a daily bases are trying to stop the unarmed black males and females from losing their life from government officials, cops, and racist individuals. In his article he does not announce what the movement is and why as of today we have a movement where we try to explain why black lives as of today should be equivalent to people of all different colors. The black lives matter community is fighting for their rights, and for equality being that there has been plenty of times where the system has failed us. The media influence our ideas of implicit bias, especially when it comes to ideas of race and criminality being that they show a certain perception of a group of people painting them as monsters or people in which others should fear. Fear is a root too are current problems and fear as a result can lead to serious problems where people can be hurt , arrested, and end up dead. This article by Fox News is an article in which gives a image in which people should fear black individuals who uses their voice to speak up against their hardships. This article is an example of how media influence our ideas of implicit bias especially when it comes to ideas of race and criminality. Rob Smith projects his views as a black man living as of today is fearful of his own community, his own race. This is huge especially because he is black and is giving this image that If he is afraid everyone else has a right to be as well. His bias is allowing people to continue to base criminals to a certain race which is African American individuals. He then tries to justify what he is saying by saying that the black lives matter movement shouldn’t be a movement basically because of black on black crime. As of today Black on Black crime will forever be a phrase in which upsets me. The media as of today uses “black on black crime” to justify what they are doing. There is no such thing as black on black crime in my eyes because no black person kills their own because they are black. Same way no white person kills another white person because they are white. That is just called a crime you do not throw a race in front of a crime. In North Korea , Japan, Ireland, New Zealand, and etc they all experience crime rates as a whole even with majority of the same ethnic groups. Crime is something that is just destined to happen , no matter who is killing who or what race they are.

Part 3b

O’ Riley in his interview establish from off jump that African Americans are criminals. He brings up statistics from an unknown source in which he uses to  try to justify why African Americans should be arrested , and basically should be stopped. He uses statistics which are saying that white individuals are the ones who are being arrested more the African Americans . He uses that statistic to try and prove that the police as of today are doing nothing wrong , and how African Americans are getting arrested because they are in the wrong.  He then goes on to say that crime rates have went up due to the black lives matter movement due to the defund the police situation. He tries to tell the media that African American individuals are the threat in which cops need to eliminate. He starts off with saying “Black lives matter movement is killing Americans” . Reading and hearing that phrase from the jump you can make the assumption that African Americans are the one who are the cause and root to all problems. When a person only watch Fox News they are getting biases in which are labeling  certain groups as the predators, and how people should protect themselves.  Bill O Riley  classify black individuals as suspicious ,in his news broadcast he says “The Chicago police no longer stop suspicious people” then goes on to say ” Black males between ages 14 &17 commit homicide at ten times the rate than white and hispanics teens combined”. He labels African Americans as the criminals. This implicit bias as a whole compares African Americans to criminals. He uses his media to try  and prove to the public that African Americans are Americans biggest threat. He then forget to add the amount of black individuals who are wrongfully committed of murder. Did you know that black people are 7 times more likely to be wrongfully convicted of murder compared to a white person. He uses his media to broadcast his thoughts and his wrong statistics in order to convince people that black individuals are the ones who people should be fear, and as a result of that people tend to react in a way in which puts African Americans in danger, and why the black lives matter movement continues to stand tall.

“BLM’s cult-like tactics are more like those of a violent gang than a traditional civil rights group fighting against racial discrimination. The organization refuses to acknowledge the Black lives lost in the violence it has engaged in. It refuses to acknowledge the tragedy of Black lives lost to criminals. It focuses solely on far smaller number of Black people injured or killed in encounters with police.”

“Yet we see no BLM rallies and marches for Black crime victims, including murder victims. Don’t those Black lives matter? Where are the posters demanding justice for these people?

The truth is that the tragic loss of these Black lives can’t be used to further the radical BLM agenda, so the organizations ignores them.  ”

“They’re criminals. BLM is their cult. It is their religion. It is what gives them purpose. And that should make Americans of any color deeply uncomfortable.   ”

Modern Effects of the Cold War (Entry 2)

Part 2:
Forms of government and economics intertwine for one cannot fully stabilize itself without the other. Every country needs a stable economy to maintain an effective form of government. In the first entry, I broke down the origins of the two main forms of government that competed for global expansion during the Cold War Era. This entry will cover the lasting effects the Cold War has on the US and USSR’s economy and the events leading to it. How the Cold War changed America’s economy forever is through technological growth and international trade. During the Cold War, America grew technologically by competing with Russia in what is known as the Space Race. The Space race was a 20 year technological competition between the two countries that grew rapidly after Russia launched Sputnik I, the first satellite. During this period, NASA inventions ultimately lead space exploration possible. This resulted in Apollo 11, the first crew members to walk the moon. After this American accomplishment, the US ultimately won the Space Race. Their inventions that were used during the Race are used today in forms such as CAT scans, freeze dried food, infrared thermometers, and kidney dialysis machines. Another way the American economy changed was through international trade with other countries. One example is China albeit the negative tension the two countries share. As the Cold War started to ease slowly, President Nixon sought to de-escalate tension and instead open up business partnership with China. Ever since those relations, trades with China lead to America accumulating a total of $558 billion dollars by 2019. How the USSR’s economy changed forever was failed attempts of western policies leading to its collapse. The Soviet Union experienced initial growth after WWII but slowly started to fail under the Premier Nikita Khrushchev. Khrushchev sought to decentralize (break down into multiple sectors) the economy with his “second economy” policy but failed due to food shortages and a weakened relationship with China. Khrushchev soon left office due to his failed credibility. After he left, Mikhail Gorbachev became leader and implemented capitalistic economic policies such as ‘perestroika’ or reconstructing to revive an ailing USSR. Although it appeared to work, Soviets who were opposed to these policies reacted with chaos by attempting to overthrow Gorbachev, causing perestroika to fail. This marked the final years of the Soviet Union until its inevitable collapse in 1991.

Part 3:
The article that elaborates on the US economical effects gives an overall positive reception. I agree that the lasting economic impact are beneficial. America, a superpower, is doing well as the richest country in the world with universal relations and advanced technology: “At the same time, we’ve benefited from the technological innovations sparked by NASA and other advances of the era.” Russia is, however, on the contrary. Russia is a potential superpower with an economy that ranks 11th most richest country in the world. Their decline in the article used states failed policies increased the collapse rate: “Perestroika was Gorbachev’s plan for economic restructuring. Under perestroika, the Soviet Union began to move toward a hybrid communist-capitalist system, much like modern China”, “Meanwhile, Gorbachev’s reforms were slow to bear fruit and did more to hasten the collapse of the Soviet Union than to help it. A loosening of controls over the Soviet people emboldened independence movements in the Soviet satellites of Eastern Europe.” I agree with these statements because Gorbachev’s policies sparked a slow transition to a more democratic nation thus destabilizing the Communist rule. This transition nailed the coffin in the collapse of the USSR. Russia continues to economically struggle due to other nations such as the United States imposing economic sanctions, hurting their economy more. Both these documents tell me that America, both economically and technologically has the upper hand. Next, entry will be about another major factor in the Cold War that heavily breathes today: proxy wars.

Part 4:
“Many of the effects of the Cold War are so ingrained in the American experience that we just take them for granted. We’ve learned to live with the threat of nuclear annihilation and ongoing conflicts in world hotspots.”

“On December 25, Gorbachev resigned as leader of the USSR. The Soviet Union ceased to exist on December 31, 1991.”

Source Entry 2 & 3

“Myths About the Underground Railroad.” PBS, Public Broadcasting Service, 8 Nov. 2013, www.pbs.org/wnet/african-americans-many-rivers-to-cross/history/who-really-ran-the-underground-railroad/.

This article bluntly explains the truth of racism in the north, beginning with slavery. States such as: Boston, Philadelphia, New York, and much more, participated in the owning of slaves. Even American revolutionists (John Hancock, Benjamin Franklin), bought, sold, and owned black people and other prominent American “heroes” did as well. A historian named Joanne Pope Melish recalls a time in the 1950s where her high school textbook discussed slavery only occurring in the South. However, when she lived in Rhode Island after 1964, she encountered a vague reference to local slavery, and almost every person she asked knew anything about it. But, when asking the members of the historical society, they told her it was “brief and benign, involving only the best families, who behaved with genteel kindness.” Furthermore, although slavery existed in the north, it never reached the numbers of the south. Slavery played a huge role in the economy of northern states, but it failed due to climate and economy. It had little to do with morality.
The author includes an important statement saying, “The North failed to develop large-scale agrarian slavery, such as later arose in the Deep South, but that had little to do with morality and much to do with climate and economy.” Many history books today tell us that the north disliked the idea of owning black people, hence why it wasn’t rampant in the north. They also say that slavery did not exist in the North due to climate, and their way of producing money, which was factories. Yes, they were not able to create a full scale “operation” as the south, but they still participated.
In many current pieces regarding slavery in the north, it was always said that northerners detested the slavery, however, in the article, the author argues that “The elements which characterized Southern slavery in the 19th century, and which New England abolitionists claimed to view with abhorrence, all were present from an early date in the North. Practices such as the breeding of slaves like animals for market, or the crime of slave mothers killing their infants, testify that slavery’s brutalizing force was at work in New England.” This proves that some historians have turned the truth into something that they deemed appropriate in order to paint America as the “land of the free”. They admit to slavery, but they water it down by saying, the north abhorred how the south treated black people. They didn’t agree to their brutal style at all, but we see here that this was falsified to make it seem like slavery wasn’t as bad as what it actually was.
“When the Northern states gave up the last remnants of legal slavery, in the generation after the Revolution, their motives were a mix of piety, morality, and ethics; fear of a growing black population; practical economics; and the fact that the Revolutionary War had broken the Northern slaveowners’ power and drained off much of the slave population…Slavery lingered there until the Civil War, with the state reporting 236 slaves in 1850 and 18 as late as 1860.”

Sokol, Jason. “The North Isn’t Better than the South: The Real History of Modern Racism and Segregation above the Mason-Dixon Line.” Salon, Salon.com, 13 Dec. 2014, www.salon.com/2014/12/14/the_north_isnt_better_than_the_south_the_real_history_of_modern_racism_and_segregation_above_the_mason_dixon_line/.

American History creates an image of the north as the land for liberty. The actual land of opportunity.  If you were to ask anyone their thoughts on northern history, they might tell you that they were an ally to black people. White abolitionists fought for the freedom of black people. The union fought solely for the purpose of the betterment of black people. The North was an amazing place for black people to live in. They were able to live as their own freely; no discrimination, so segregation. But the reality of it all is proven otherwise. The North has a sinister side to it, a side that the history taught in schools doesn’t expand on. Slavery had roots in New England and New York City and the history of the twentieth-century shows the horrifying record of racial violence and the segregated communities of white and black neighborhoods.
This article brings up an interesting fact, that I wasn’t sure was true. Sokol states, “…the centrality of African slavery in many northern cities, episodes of brutal racial violence like the New York City Draft Riots, or the fact that Jim Crow laws had their origins in Massachusetts.” In the PBS written article on Northern History, Margaret Johnson included a similar statement as well. I was a bit skeptical since it was a claim that I never heard of and because she did not include the specific state. However, Sokol mentions that segregation in fact originated in the North, specifically in Massachusetts. The south has a clear part in the racism in America, however, the pride and glory of America (the North) is just as guilty for the oppression of black people.
“Even when the rhetoric about liberty rang hollow, northern blacks could embarrass white leaders for failing to actualize this version of history. African Americans thus exposed the gap between the unceasing language of freedom and the inequalities that defined northern life.”
