Unit One – 3 Ways To Speak

My experience with various English really depends on who Iā€™m speaking with. Thatā€™s where I see myself change multiple times the way I speak English. Just like Jamila Lyiscott said ā€œCause I speak three tongues. One for each: Home, school, and friendsā€. This explains perfectly the three different ways I speak English because Iā€™m not always using one particular way of English. For example, in school, I would speak and write academic English. Although with my friends I would speak and write what some may say slang English. Lastly, at home, I speak and write broken English because my parents are still learning how to speak English.
Therefore, my English is very similar to Jamila Lyiscotts because we both use different types of Englishes. Which is a result of the world we live in. Mostly because everyone doesnā€™t speak proper English every single time. In less, thatā€™s how you actually speak but not everyone isnā€™t the same. Jamila also in her poetry interprets that other people may judge you for not speaking proper or general English. I have personally experienced because people will judge you right away and think of you less for not speaking English properly. This is very unfair because you donā€™t know if they actually speak English just because you heard them speak differently. I think the majority of people adapt to an English thatā€™s mostly used in society. For example, in school, you’re taught one way of English, and outside with your friends and family is a totally different way. Meaning the way I speak in school, you wonā€™t find me speaking the same way to my friends neither to my family. Overall, in my opinion, itā€™s totally fine to not always use proper English. Mostly because one thing that makes you, you is the way you speak. Where we as a person choose when and where we want to speak the English we think is appropriate.

Read Like A Writer

Notes:
  • I agree with RLW
  • “You are reading to learn about writing” – of course, because it helps us in our writing in many different ways.
  • I agree we all have different techniques when we writing.
  • Great, advise in making a list of the advantages and disadvantages of using certain techniques.
When Mike Bunn writes in his article ā€œ You are already an authorā€ it means that we are our own authors. Yes of course we havenā€™t sold out books or either well recognized. However, thatā€™s not what authors are just about. Authors are people who write doesnā€™t matter whether itā€™s for a homework assignment or for research. It doesnā€™t have to be necessarily because you wrote a book. But because you’re the author for every writing piece you have written. You choose every word, sentence, and what writing strategies to use. For example, I have written many essays for high school. Most of these essays are done after we finish reading a book. The reason why teachers assigned these essays is to see if we have actually read and paid attention to the book. Which makes sense because the more we read the more will improve our writing skills. Now all those books and articles I have read have helped me in developing my writing skills. This will allow me to succeed in my reading and writing career path.
According to Mike Bunn’s article, reading how the author wrote and seeing how he/she influences us, readers, by the choices the author has made in their writing. This is actually something I would like to apply to my writing. Mostly because in my writings Iā€™m usually trying to send a message and I would like to influence that message to the readers. Also actually go through those choices that a writer has to make. Meaning like using certain techniques or using specific wording that can help my writing skill. Just like in Mike Bunn’s articles, the way he used certain words and writing skills to make us readers understand heā€™s point of view. I really hope this would help my writing improve a lot. Also will help the reader understand my writing.

Time Capsule

Itā€™s finally the end of the semester Yadira. Iā€™m so proud of you. For pushing through every mornings and nights studying and finishing homework. It was all worth it because now your one more step closer to achieving your goal of becoming a lawyer. I hope you kept that goal in having all Aā€™s in your classes. Although if you didnā€™t donā€™t beat yourself up for it because I know you still did great. By now I think you have developed the way you write and know your strengths and weaknesses in writing. Now take everything you have learned like certain skills or strategies in writing, and apply to your next semester but also to your day to day life writing. Finishing your first semester made you officially ready for your next semester and I’m so happy for you. I know you must be very excited and relieved because you made it and that was your main goal for this semester. However, as shown in the picture my main goal is to graduate college and being able to go on with my career path.
