Right Coast – “The End”

The photograph is landscape of a beach setting, just at the break of dawn. The sun is halfway above the horizon shining down on the wet sand making it not just look but feel like a great morning. A surfer heads towards the water hoping to ride some great waves early in the morning while the beach is clear. The mood in this picture I believe is peaceful because it just makes you want to live life with nothing to worry about but do what you love to do, which in this case the guy loves to surf and that’s what he’s waking up at the break of dawn to go do.
The photographer used the natural light from the sun to help mood the picture, one thing a lot of people like to see in the morning is a beautiful horizon and that’s how the photographer captured the peaceful mood. The surfer in the middle of the picture helps show that he’s determined to do what he loves not by being awake so early but because he’s the only one on the beach at the moment. The photographer also captured the position of this picture perfectly, she positioned the camera at the right time so that everything is in a straight line, the waves, the clouds and the rocks making the horizon are all making a straight line. The rocks in the sand also show a pattern that has been captured In the photo they too also shine with the light making it seem more alive.

You describe the appeal of this photograph well: it represents doing what one loves to do. The formal elements you describe in the second paragraph work well to create a stable, unthreatening view of the ocean.
