“The Lams of Ludlow Street” (Collections First Photo)

This photo may seem like an ordinary apartment door with graffiti on it, but it’s more than that to who ever really looks at it. The writing most likely has a meaning to it or could have been done out of boredom. It’s dark and has a grimy effect, and that’s most likely due to the writing being thrown all over the door. The writing isn’t really understandable, but is easier because the door is black, and most of the writing is white. The repetitive looking typefaces also make it easier understand exactly what it is. That also gives this photo a darker feeling is the age of the writing and door. I like the overall look of this photo because its not straight forward and open to many debatable assumptions.

Adding a black and white effect also put the feeling of this photo in a dark place, and adds contrast of the writing and actual door. The lines in this photograph are really interesting; you have the simple lines in the middle of the photo but then the lines of the words make out an whole other bunch of lines that take form into a language that someone somewhere could understand. The only shape that there really is, is the square in the middle of the photo, and the slanted boxes in that square. The balance of the photo is also good because there are large amounts of wring the door and the photographer making the photo black and white helped a lot with the balance. The elements of this photo help to create the mood of the photograph by working separately on different levels. The black and white effect added with the carelessness of the way the graffiti Is wrote makes the image overall feel like the black and white are fighting and it can’t be controlled but yet still subtle.

You describe the photo well. I find it interesting that Holton used this photograph to start his series. The door really gives a sense of where the Lams live without showing us the whole street.
