What exactly do we have to know about a particular poem on the midterm?
It’s not that you have to know something about a particular poem — it’s that I want you to come to a poem you haven’t read before and to put together an explication of it using the close-reading practices we’ve been working on in class, using evidence from the text to make your points. Think, for instance, about the reading of Frost’s “The Silken Tent” we did in class on Tuesday based on the meaning of the words “relent” and “bondage”
