Robert Louis Stevenson was able to show Gothic literature to the audience in Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde. As I read the book the setting was able to bring that spooky and gave that anticipation to the readers, what was going to happen next or when the characters would finally be able to see Mr Hyde. “By ten o’clock when the shops were closed, the by street was very solitary and in spite of the low growl of London from all around, very silent.” Robert Louis Stevenson was able to give this eerie feeling to the readers, showing how the horrifying come out at night. The author used setting to describe the appearance of Mr. Hyde because later on in the book that when we are able to know the appearance of Mr Hyde. The importance of setting in the book is shown.
As I read the book we found out that Dr Jekyll started this experiment of creating “Mr Hyde” was innocent at first, because we read before that Dr Jekyll was sort of wild in the past, so creating Mr Hyde was a way to bring his young self again. To feel young again for a while. Even though we see Mr Hyde as the bad side of Dr Jekyll, as time went on Jekyll was suspecting what Mr Hyde was doing such as the murders, he didn’t try to stop it somehow. In a way subconsciously started to believe there were two different people, as in he knew when Mr Hyde was doing something wrong, it was actually him also committing that in a way. He seemed to hide behind Mr Hyde and started to make himself believe he did nothing wrong. It sort makes you think it was not only Mr Hyde who was evil, but also Dr Jekyll.
