Critical Response 6

The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde was a really interesting story. During this story we come across with various gothic moments. One gothic moment example is the night that Mr. Utterson is called to Jekyll’s house by a servant who thinks he hears a strange noise coming from Jekyll’s room. They found Hyde dead with Jekyll missing. At the end, after Mr. Utterson read a series of letters and it was found that Jekyll and Hyde were the same person.

I found the last chapter to be one of the most interesting chapters in the book. During this chapter, we get Jekyll’s confession letters, saying how Jekyll and Hyde were the same person. In his letter, he said that by drinking a potion, he could transform into Hyde, which was a scary experience. It is clear that when Jekyll was Hyde, he could act any way he wanted without any of the responsibility. This may be why Hyde was “deformed” and was seen as a strange, repugnant man, I believe that Jekyll’s evil was reflected in Hyde’s physical appearance.
