Dr.Jekyll and Mr.Hyde

Just as in Frankenstein the Protagonist is following a format which makes the book a page turner. Rather than having one character, in this novel two character seem to double each other. Dr. Jekyll is an ordinary doctor whose actions follow suit with the norms of the society. However his friend Mr. Hyde seems to characterize a different approach. Not only is he short and juggernaut like, he also seem to be considered deformed. His personality is so ugly that people looking at him can’t picture him as normal.

Dr. Jekyll who seem to be normal would sometimes show secret urges which seem to follow suit with Mr. Hyde’s personality. Especially while drinking, he explains how his dark urges would surface and he seems to take the persona of Hyde himself. This means that both Characters could  be considered one dynamic character. Separately they can be seen as the psychological terms of id and superego. Hyde can be seen as solely thinking with the id part of his conscious. This is the part that takes a primitive role or Thanatos which consist of the dark urges of need. Dr.Jekyll can be seen as mostly using the superego. This is the part of conscious which controls the id and tends to follow societal morals. However there are times when this is overridden they tend to overlap roles which could be considered the ego.

One Response to Dr.Jekyll and Mr.Hyde

The idea of doubling in both Jeckyll and Hyde and Frankenstein is a very prevelant concept, with Frankenstein it was two separate characters in the creature and Victor, and then Jeckyll and Hyde. This idea of doubling is something that we have seen in the gothic novels we have read, where the supposed protagonist is someone who is likeable and someone we can relate to and the antagonist is someone who we see as a dark figure who can say is the bad guy. But these to characterss are actually the same person
