Jonathan

The first few chapters that we read of Dracula was very interesting. I really enjoyed the atmosphere that Bram Stoker set up while describing all the horrible things that occurred within the castle. There seemed to be a lot of darkness throughout many different occasions. It was also enjoyable to see how oblivious Jonathan Harker seemed to be during all those weird occasions. How a crowd full of people warning him against demons and monstrosities within the area he was headed towards, could not persuade him to stay away and head back home to his loving fiancé. It became even more enjoyable to see that Jonathan hurt himself while shaving causing blood to trickle down his neck which led to Dracula attempting to attack him. “His eyes blazed with a sort of demonic fury, and he suddenly made a grab for my neck” that was when Dracula was stopped from harming Jonathan because of the crucifix on his neck. After this occurred he went down to the dining room to eat as if what had just occurred were a minor incident. Only when he saw Dracula climbing down the Castle walls like a lizard he came to the conclusion that something was off with him. Perhaps you can say ambition blinded him and that was what drove him to stay, before he realized he was trapped and couldn’t leave. Apart from being an oblivious man to the monstrosity that was before him, I think that it was very courageous for him to attempt to wound Dracula before making his escape.
