I really enjoyed the book Dracula. In Chapters one through five, we see many gothic elements, such as Horror, dark magic, Good vs Evil, mystery, journey into the unknown, despair, etc. Jonathan, an English lower, starts to write in a diary kept by him on his adventure from England to Eastern Europe. He goes on the adventure in the hopes of closing a deal with sealing a deal with a nobleman who goes by the name of Count Dracula. He is very educated , as his English speaks well for himself. He describes the Count as having Pale skin, pointy ears, and very thick eyebrows. Its at this point, he doesnt know what the Count actually is. Relating to the black magic theme, the count begins to tell of a superstition, relating to a Blue Flame. It is hinted that the blue flames mark where gold and treasure is. As a day passes on, he slowly realizes that the Count hasn’t necessarily eaten or drank anything, something he hasnt seen for himself. He does a bit more investigating as the day goes on. He soon realizes that he may be a prisoner in his castle due to the fact that most of the doors in the castle are locked, and that he cant really leave, and the only way to leave is through windows that are hundred of feet down into a gorge, and this correlates to the theme of despair, as a trip that was intended to close a deal has turned into a prison.
