Critical Response 5

When I started reading Dracula, at first I thought that the book was going to be boring, but the readings are getting more and more excited as I read. In chapters 1-5, we can found many gothic elements such as magic, horror and mystery. In chapter 1, we can see magic with the blue flame that keeps appearing, that is unobstructed by the count’s body. We can also see horror when the driver disappeared and the horses are frightened and later a ring of wolves surrounded the coach. In chapter 2, we can see examples of mystery. For example, the behavior of the count is very strange, he does not eat, drink, or, sleep, he is the only one living in the castle, and does not appear in a mirror. One moment that I found interesting is when Harker received a visit from three beautiful women. He said, “”I felt in my heart a wicked, burning desire that they would kiss me with those red lips.” I think that Harker feels a little guilty for wanting to kiss the brides of Dracula Stoker.
