At first I wasn’t interested in learning about Gothic Literature because I thought it would be weird, but after reading “The Castle of Otranto” I realized this may be worth learning about. In today’s century versus in the 18th century when gothic was more powerful, some today may not think what happens within the gothic culture is scary. I love how in the book the author tries their best to make you feel like you’re seeing what’s going on through reading. You become more into the story and believe what happened back then was scary compared to now. For example, on page 41 when diego and Jaquez heard echoed voices and noises as they went to look for the princess, they’ve became terrified. Jaquez then realized he saw a ghost coming out of the gallery. He was so in shock it took him a long time to explain to Manfred what happened to the princess. It was so scary he compared it to seeing 10 ghost at once. Reading this thinking of the 18th century made you feel like this moment was very scary and put you into their shoes. If you were to read this book in todays century it wouldn’t be as scary, dark or terrifying. I am enjoying gothic literature so far and I am excited to see what other gothic conventions the other books bring.

  1. I had a similar opinion as you when I started reading this book. At first, I thought that I wasn’t going to enjoy the book, but after I started reading and understanding, I started enjoying it. Before reading this book, I didn’t know even know what gothic meant. After reading the Castle of Otranto, I understood that in gothic literature we can find elements such as horror, death, romance, mystery and suspense.

I agree with you, at first I felt that it would be boring, but until I read “Castle of Otranto” I start to find it interesting and the lectures we had in class made me want to learn more about how it was like in the 18 century. Its cool to see how Gothic is in many novels, horror movies. Elements that are found in Gothic such as gloomy, decaying setting, supernatural beings or monsters, curses and prophecies ,damsels in distress, heroes , romance, and intense emotions. Books that contains these elements are worth to read.

  3. I agree, I also didn’t find Gothic Literature interesting before ‘The Castle of Otranto’ but the way the book was set up left an interesting idea on what its about.

At first I also didnt believe gothic literature would be all the instresting since my likings ussually recide with mystery. However as seen in the castle of otranto, it is jampacked with mystery and the unknown. The addition of gothic features and the uncanny added a new twist to my ordinary fbi and serial killer sort of mystery.

I was always a big fan of Gothic literature since I was in the 6th grade. I believe that Castle of Otranto made my experience even better because now I can follow up with all the fancy terms that I learned in class and the way they were related to the book itself.
