Micro-Activity #9: Analyzing the Declaration of Independence

Section 1: When it comes to choosing a course of action, of how political bonds would be broken as a society they need to make a decision and explain why as a group they had made that decision. This is written at the beginning of the Declaration of Independence so this explain what would happens when things come to worse.

Section 2: As a society they have the right to overthrow the government and introduce a new one, this can only be done if the current government is not doing what they were supposed to and is becoming destructive.  The reason this was written is to make the people think they have power, they get to choose who controls them but it’s not written like that.

Section 3:  In this section there is an extensive list of reasons why the colonies should become independent and why they should fight for the release of any ties they have with the English. This section would have been the most persuasive to the audience because it basically lists of all the damage the English have done to the colonies, there is nothing really positive in this section. Instead of saying the country’s name they use the word “He” making it feel like they are talking about a person which doesn’t sound as intimidating makes the people feel with more power and they could achieve the goal that was presented to them.

Section 4: They repeatedly asked for their freedom, they presented their terms several reasons and each time they have the outcome was brutal. A country who won’t listen to their own people shouldn’t not be in charge of their freedom or the decision making for the people. This is a small section it brings their reasons as to why they should fight for their independence to a close.

Section 5: The Colonies had warned over and over again what would happened if their terms to become free weren’t respected. Not matter what they told the English, they did not listen so now they should face the consequences. The reason for this section is to give purpose to their actions, to inform the people that there is a reason behind what is going to be happening.

Section 6: Representatives of the Colonies have declared their freedom and all the connections to the English will be cut. Now that the states are free they themselves could decide what happens, the people get to make their own choices as an independent state as long as there is a representative. The reason for this section is to bring all the points to a close, they made it clear what they had decided on, it was to remind the people that everything they did was for their freedom no matter what it took.

In my view the most persuasive aspect of this document would be the listing of the reasons why the people needed to be free. This was the most persuasive to me because it was straight to the point, there were no long paragraphs it was easy to understand the reasoning behind each point. Other then that I felt like the document just kept mentioning the idea of freedom and how everything would change but that wasn’t completely true.

One of the claims that I feel relate to concerns, issues, or problems in American society today is “People have the right to take back power from the government.  Restates the end—human safety and happiness—and connects the principles and forms of government as means to this ends.”  This has been one of the biggest issue in America, there hasn’t been one case where the people have successfully and safely taken power back from the government eventhoug there has been reasons to take the powerback.

Excellent work summarizing the sections of the Declaration and noting the strength of the list. I wonder where and how you see the idea of taking back government at work today? Think about it as you think about issues for the Unit 2 Assignment.
