Micro-Activity # 6: Responding to Wollstonecraft

Wollstonecraft is writing this letter to request  equality and human rights to the women of France. She is asking legislative congress  to revise the rights of women in the future reformed constitution . Wollstonecraft is part of the DC of women in France, these women had no human rights or self independence.  I believe she represents the DC of women of France. She considers her self part of this discourse community because she is a female herself and even though she is well educated and has some knowledge of the world she continues to fight for the other half of humanity like she quotes in her letter. She genuinely fights for these women who are uneducated and have no voice in a world full of powerful men.

Quote 1:  “Tyrants of every kind, from the weak king to the weak father of a family, use this same argument ·that ‘It is in your own best interests”( Wollstonecraft pg.2)

Wollstonecraft is using the strategy of comparison. She compares men to tyrant kings. This is a useful strategy because this creates guilt to the men in power since they are currently revolting against a monarchy in France.

Quote 2:  “Personal restraint and respect for cleanliness and delicacy in domestic life are the graceful pillars of modesty, but French women almost despise them.” ( Wollstonecraft pg.1)

In this quote she is using personal description to catch the attention of her listeners. She is doing this by describing vividly how unhappy women  feel  being viewed only as homemakers and having their rights stripped away from them. This a good strategy because the listener can emphasize to the injustice and the belittle-ting of women.

You did an especially good job analyzing the strategy in the first quote you pick. Here as in many places, Wollstonecraft is using the values of the listener to appeal to him. She is telling them that by refusing women education they are acting as badly as those they just revolted against. This is like Douglass comparing the audience to the British they see as tyrants.
