Developing Research Questions

The topic I chose was Black Lives Matter.

Preliminary Research:

In my research I found that the Black Lives Matter movement is a movement calling out to those who are racist or don’t value Black lives that they matter and that the racial injustice against Black people needs to stop. After the horrible and cruel murder of George Floyd this movement picked up a lot of supporters and rioting began to demand justice for the Black lives lost due to racist actions. Black people have a very notable past of racism against them. This movement is often called radical because of the violent incidents that have happened as a result of riots when calling for justice. Some people disagree with this movement and as a counter people have made the “All Lives Matter” movement.

Questions:

Why is the idea that Black peoples lives matter considered a controversial opinion/statement?

What after effects did this movement have on the world and on society in general? Were there more good or bad effects?

How can we as students take action and help support this movement?

I think this topic can be hard because there is so much and you do a good job in that you are trying to narrow down. I think your first questions might be too opinion based to be do-able. I could be wrong and you can certainly see what you find. You second question, I would look to see the effects that the movement has had but now ask about whether good or bad because that is kind of like a yes/no answer. Just see what you find.
However, I particularly like the idea of researching to see how the movement can be supported. I have seen things like–how can non-black people help support Black Lives Matter? And I like the idea of looking to see what students can do because maybe there is campus-wide initiatives and strategies that make sense that we don’t know about. See what you find and we can always check in and reassess if you get stuck.
