The model that I am choosing to make is a letter. What inspired me to write a letter was Mary Wollstonecraft’s dedication letter about women’s rights, which is very good for me because it is a topic similar to mine since my discource community is about a feminist group that deals with fighting for women’s rights, and the way she dedicated that letter seemed like a very good way of expressing the issue to someone else. I think that this genre will help me develop my argument because I am very familiar with it. I feel that it is a good topic to talk about since it is part of our society. It is also a very important topic, especially for women. A letter would be like giving a direct message and expressing everything in order to make a change. I would write this letter to the president because I feel that he could listen to me and he could understand my point of view. He is a person who could make a big change. He is someone who could enhance a woman and help her with her independence, so my letter would go directly to him.
Something I am going to write about is abortion. It is an issue that affects practically everyone because the population is divided about whether abortion should be made legal or illegal. Some think not because it is the life of a human being, and others think yes because it is the body of each person, and the reason could be for a violation due to economic or health problems. To be more specific, this problem mainly affects women, for example, in their health, since when they have an abortion they are left with physical or mental sequelae, which on certain occasions are caused by clandestine clinics that carry out the abortion and end up affecting health, and it is even very risky because, in certain cases, they even die. They affect them mentally because, after that, they are traumatized, they need a psychologist, and they even feel guilty. In addition, it also affects women because they carry the baby for 9 months. Sometimes the parents do not take charge, and it is up to them to take charge. Feminism enters here because women use this medium to declare that they want abortion to become legal. It is a very extensive problem to talk about because it is something that 100% of the population do not have the same idea or thoughts about. But basically, this is something that definitely will be included in my argument.
Josseline, As you say this is a huge issue and can become overwhelming when trying to write focused letter. I think you need to identify a focused problem related to abortion and then focused purple for your letter. Since abortions are still legal in NY, then maybe you want to think about the problem of accessibility or the problem of the way it is discussed which causes the guilt you mention. We can discuss more in class tomorrow before you begin to write.
