A glossary entry consist of finding words that were unfamiliar in any reading piece, than looking up the real definition of what the word meant. Each week I have always found a word that I was unfamiliar with, and before looking up at the possible definition, I would guess what that word could mean, most of the time my definition verses the actual one would match.Finding words that I have never heard of helped me expand my vocabulary, which I find very useful for the future.Writing essays, reading, giving out speeches, or even being in an interview deals with having a good and expanded vocabulary. It is important for us to know what certain words mean because we never know where and when it will show up. Doing glossary entries was an important skill to help me learn new words every week, and also looking at my other classmates words was helpful as well. We basically made a class dictionary. Reading articles, short stories, and passages got me in the habit of always annotating, and writing in the margins of the words I did not know the meaning of. Its a good skill to have in college, especially in an english class. I will definitely continue using this skill in the future, and I will gladly teach others the new words I’ve learned.

In order to do a glossary entry, you had to look for any words you did not know from any readings we were doing in class,  heard the professor say or a classmate too, or even articles we used outside of class. We chose one word for each entry, and wrote about the meaning of the word, where in the reading it was found and how it helps you better understand what the author was saying after now knowing the definition of the word. Doing these glossary entries throughout the semester was very beneficial for me. It made me understand that it is very important to know the definitions of words when reading an article, story, etc. because it help’s you better understand what it is you are reading and comprehend what the author is saying. It also helped me when I annotated, I got in the habit of circling any unknown words and searching up the definitions of them so I could comprehend the articles we read or searched up in class. This activity also helped me to use higher vocabulary when writing papers and in some cases probably start using them on a presentation or my public speaking. Therefore, these glossary entries were very helpful this semester and the strategies I got from it, I will try to continue to use them in my upcoming semester.

To do a glossary entry you find the definition of the word that best fits the sentence. Then you find wether it’s a noun, verb or adjective. Then you write why you think the writer chose that word. When I first started doing the glossary entries I thought to myself how will this actually help me as a writer. As I look back on all the words that I chose for my glossary entries I feel proud of myself. These glossary entries have helped me learn new words and have also helped me improve my vocabulary in my writings. Throughout this semester all the readings I did in class have helped me see the world in a perspective and I got to discover new authors.

The glossary assignment is a great way to improve your vocabulary and understand what the author is trying to show us. Searching for the meaning and typing it down is a great way to show improvement academically. After knowing the meaning of the word and going back to the article to read the same paragraph is a great way to understand the details the author is trying to give to the audience. Some of the words that I have searched can have different meaning, depending on how the author or the reading interprets it. Using this method in other classes can improve your English and grades. This method helped me learn more English as English is my second language. This assignment helped me reach to my full potential on knowing the meanings of the words and  its a great opportunity for other students to learn this way if they want to improve.

Duty to Rescue

The word duty to rescue means  “a concept of tort law and refers to the duty of a person to rescue another who is in a dangerous situation”. This word means that a person should step up and help others if they are able to help. The word duty to rescue was used in our presentation for “Sweats” by Zora Neale Hurston to prove Delia guilty from not helping Sykes when he was yelling for help. The word duty to rescue is a law according to USLEGAL. With the definition of the word, we were able to present the class how morality played a role in the scene, proving that she was guilty and she had the power to help but she did not

When I first started this glossary entry long term project, I wasnt’s sure on how it would go. Over time like around the 2 week mark, I started seeing words other students made pop up in my school email when I checked it. When I saw some of the words from other students that looked unfamiliar, I would click on the email and read what the word means and the description that was written by the student. I feel this was a good way of expanding my vocabulary on a weekly basis since this was a project that was due every week. If I didn’t understand what a word meant, I would make note of it and do my weekly entry on it sometime later. Some of the words I did had multiple meanings like “Bear” and “Concealed”. It made me be more aware if other words had more than one meaning. I look at he context of how the word is used like for the word “bear”. The animal bear didn’t make sense in the context of how it was used in the sentence, so I knew it had to have another meaning. I think this way of thinking could greately expand my vocabulary and learn more about sentence structure. So I feel that this was a useful learning experience and I am appreciative that I had the opportunity to do this in my freshman year of college.

After I done this twelve word, I reflected back I feel like I learn a lot of thing, this my first time doing this kind of work, it really helpul, it help me to understand each word how to use it on the sentence from the test or article, first you read the test word by word and then  to find out which word I really don’t know after that I read the whole sentence from the word I don’t understand again and again, after I still don’t get the word , I will considered this is my word of the week, then I got to William-Webster to search the meaning of the word, and then read it, after I get the meaning I will try to use it on the sentence that I didn’t understand, spent a little bit of time from me and figure the meaning of the word in this sentence, after I really don’t know what it meaning I will go to William-Webster again and read it again, after the second tried, I always  will get the idea what the word of the week mean. This homework help me to improve my english vocabulary, I really learn a lot of vocabulary, not only on this 12 vocabulary, far more than that. I will try to keep use this method of learning to improve my vocabulary, so I can know more vocabulary than before. Also I always go to see my classmate vocabulary and then see there vocabulary word , then learn it from them, which is really helpful.

The main objective of the glossary assignments was to come across words that I was unfamiliar with while reading articles and stories in class or at home. After finding these new words, I would label them as a noun, verb, or adjective. Next I would put the definition and explain what I first thought the word meant. Finally, I would describe how the word is being used and explain how it connects within the bases of the story. I think this assignment was very helpful because it made my understanding of the reading flow more progressively and clearly. For example, it allowed me to break down the sentences and understand what the author was actually trying to convey to me as the reader. Also, with learning new words it built and enhanced my vocabulary as a whole because I found more complex words to use instead of basic ones. For instance, the simpler words are more specific and straight forward while the complex words can be used to describe different things or have a deeper meaning. In addition, these complex words helped me with my pronunciation and also finding out where they originated from. It affected my coordination and communication with my classmates because we would help each other figure out what the word means. Meaning, if one person knew what the word meant, they could explain what it is and how it’s used in the text.

Introspection (noun)

According to MerriamWebster, introspection means “a reflective looking inward an examination of one’s own thoughts and feelings.” This word can be found in the story “Sweat” by Zora Neale Hurston. For example, “A period of introspection, a space of retrospection, then a mixture of both.” When I first came across this word, I used context clues from the sentences before and realized that introspection had to be a sense of how she felt during that time period. Also with her sitting in silence, she thought about the snake and her husband Sykes. This is where she also brings up the word retrospection meaning she looked back on past experiences with Sykes and finally coming to the conclusion of doing all that she could.

Disdainful (adjective)

According to the web, disdainful means showing contempt or lack of respect. This word could be found in the story ” The Jury of Her Peers” by Susan Glaspell. For example, “Mrs. Hale began to arrange the dirty pans under the sink, which the county attorneys disdainful push of the foot had deranged.” When I first came across this word I thought it meant heavy or a strong push because it messed up the pans under the sink. when I looked up disdainful I realized that my definition of it was also connected to the real definition because it showed a lack of respect of how the attorneys treated them. They did not care how they treated them as long as they found the clues.
