Vigorously

The word vigorously can be found on page 277 on the article “Sweat”. In the article the word vigorously was used on the line ” he began to stir vigorously.” The word vigorously means to put great strength into based on dictionary.com. The author used the word vigorously because in the article Delilah’s husband Sykes tried to use a snake to his advantage and scare her away. When she realizes the snake starts moving vigorously because the snake is putting strength to move around.

Cumbersome

cum·ber·some

Cumbersome an adjective defined as “large or heavy and therefore difficult to carry or use; unwieldy” by Merriam-Webster dictionary. While reading “Our Love Affair With Digital Is Over” by David Sax the word cumbersome stood out. Mainly because it was an unfamiliar word. I had no idea what it meant. The sentence read “although more cumbersome and costly than its digital equivalents.” Using the context clues and the definitions I was finally able to comprehend what the word really meant. The author was portraying how board games are heavier and more difficult to carry, but they give a richer cultural experience that stays with you. Rather than just carry a blackberry and create your own community that build a more fictional aspect.

Torment

Torment is a noun. According to Merriam Webster, the definition of  torment is, “extreme pain or anguish of body or mind”. In “Sweat” by Zora Neal Hurston I found this word on the third page. This word was used to explain the torture or pain Delia is going through because of the snake that her husband brings in the house to scared her. She was abused before but now he’s using her fear to torture her.

Abundant

According to Merriam-Webster’s dictionary, abundant is identified as a adjective. It means “existing or occurring in large amounts“. In the New York Times article by Applewhite, it states, “Abundant data shows that they’re reliable, handle stress well, master new skills and are the most engaged of all workers when offered the chance to grow and advance on the job”. The word abundant is used to explain that multiple sources show older workers can offer more than younger workers. The word makes their claim stronger because its supported with data and not just opinion based.

Duty to Rescue

The word duty to rescue means  “a concept of tort law and refers to the duty of a person to rescue another who is in a dangerous situation”. This word means that a person should step up and help others if they are able to help. The word duty to rescue was used in our presentation for “Sweats” by Zora Neale Hurston to prove Delia guilty from not helping Sykes when he was yelling for help. The word duty to rescue is a law according to USLEGAL. With the definition of the word, we were able to present the class how morality played a role in the scene, proving that she was guilty and she had the power to help but she did not

Introspection (noun)

According to MerriamWebster, introspection means “a reflective looking inward : an examination of one’s own thoughts and feelings.” This word can be found in the story “Sweat” by Zora Neale Hurston. For example, “A period of introspection, a space of retrospection, then a mixture of both.” When I first came across this word, I used context clues from the sentences before and realized that introspection had to be a sense of how she felt during that time period. Also with her sitting in silence, she thought about the snake and her husband Sykes. This is where she also brings up the word retrospection meaning she looked back on past experiences with Sykes and finally coming to the conclusion of doing all that she could.

“muttered”

After reading “A jury of her peers” by Susana Glaspeal I found a word that fully got my interest and it was when I read “Well, I don’t know as Wright had, either,” she muttered”. the word “muttered” really puts me of when I read some stories and I image it has something to do talking but in what why?, some I finally put my ego aside and went to find out what it really meant. By research I found out that it means ” to utter sounds or words indistinctly or with a low voice and with the lips partly closed” which I it finally click in my head and got a sense of all the stories that I misinterpret in my English life. I feel more smart now.

Galvanized

Galvanized: to stimulate or excite as if by electric shock (verb)

When reading “Sweat” by Zora Neale Hurston, I came across the word galvanized, and I have never seen this word before in my life, so out of my curiosity I decided to look further into what galvanized could mean. But before I did that, I guessed that it had something to do with an object being new. The reason why I thought so was because, Zora Hurston uses this word by stating ” and returned with a galvanized tub and set it on the washbench” so I believed that Delia (one of the main characters in the story) came with a new tub and set it on the washbench. However when I searched up galvanized, it actually meant to stimulate or excite. So I put two and two together, Delia came with a stimulate tub which made much more sense in the sentence. Now I know how to use this word in the future.

Equitable

Equitable(Abjective)

According to a dictionary Marriam-Webster the word equitable mean “ dealing fairly and equally with all concerned”

Based on the article we learn in the class”How to Raise a Feminist Son” by Claire Cain Miller, “If we want to create  an equitable society, one in which everyone can thrive, we need to give boy more choice”.

After I knew the meaning equitable it help me to understand the whole sentence which mean tif we want out society to be equal we need to gave boy more freedom, and let them do the thing they want to.

Whir

Accordig to the Merriam-Webster the word whir is a intransitive word and means to fly revolve or move more rapidly. This word can be found in “ A jury of her peers” by Susan Glaspell and it says “ A tremendous stir inside there, another series of animal screams, the intermittent whirr of the reptile.“ This word means that the rattlesnake moved very rapidly. The author used this word in a way for us too see and feel how the rattlesnake was moving. I will use this word in my writing to describe when animals move fast.
