Dreary

/ˈdrirē/  (adjective)

Jessica Bennett, “A Master’s Degree in Masculinity”

In the essay, “A master’s degree in… masculinity?”  the word that I would like to add to my glossary is dreary.  It means feeling, displaying, or reflecting listlessness or discouragement, from Merriam-Webster. The sentence say “On a dreary Wednesday, in an open classroom, the young men and women had volunteered to be there. Which the meaning on the definition of dreary  what that sentence is trying to initiate that those young people had no other choice but to be in a classroom that they not enthusiast to be inside. For example, I can relate to this word in many ways as for instance, in my Human Biology class, the professor takes the Two hours and twenty lecturing, therefore that class in very dreary.  But the very exciting moment, when we have the ten minutes break.

Abundance

According to Merriam-Webster, the word abundance is a nouns that mean a large amount of something. This word was found in the article “boys are not all right” paragraph 3, where it said  “The brokenness of the country’s boys stands in contrast to its girls, who still face an abundance of obstacles but go into the world increasingly well equipped to take them on.”

In the essay Michael Ian Black mentions “I got dozens of messages impugning my manhood; the mildest of them called me a “soy boy””. Here he means that people began to question his manliness. So they mock him by calling him “soy boy”. I understand he is trying to convey the doubt he received from the people who mock his masculinity.

Disparity

According to the Merriam Webster the meaning of disparity is to “markedly distinct in quality or character” . It is an adjective. It can be found on paragraph 13 on the first page. In “A Mater’s Degree in… Masculinity”, by Jessica Bennett she says “he pointed to the Good Man list on the left side of the board, then to the Real Man list he’d added to the right. Look at the disparity. I think American men are confused about what it means to be a real man”. The word disparity is used to show the different elements that is used to show how man are unsure of what it means to be a man. Knowing the word helped me understand more in depth about the reading.

vulnerable

While we was reading the boys are not all right in class on Tuesday. I find a new word “vulnerable” I didn’t know what “vulnerable” mean but when I look it up on dictionary.com it give me a definition of “capable of or susceptible to being wounded or hurt, as by a weapon”. I find this word in paragraph 6 “Too many boys are trapped in the same suffocating, outdated model of masculinity, where manhood is measured in strength, where there is no way to be vulnerable without being emasculated, where manliness is about having power over others”. Now I understand what the word mean. They use the word vulnerable in the article to explain that boys are really hurt.

Albeit

According to Merriam-Webster’s dictionary, albeit is identified as a conjunction word. It means “even though, although”. On the third page of “A Master’s Degree in Masculinity”, it states,”That viewpoint has been changing, albeit slowly”. The word albeit was used to explain how mens studies were being done but hasn’t shown much improvement. It emphasizes how nothing has changed since 1991 until these recent years by universities offering courses in men studies

Commensurate

In the article, “The Boys Are Not All Right” by Michael Ian Black, the word commensurate is used to describe the movement between men and women. For example, ” No commensurate movement has emerged to help them navigate toward a full expression of their gender.” The author uses this word to explain that there is no equal balance and attention between both gender movements. This is because men feel forgotten and trapped inside of their own emotions that they cant express how they feel in the real world.

Emasculate

Emasculate: to deprive or weaken strength and identity, most likely in a man (verb)

The word Emasculate can be found in the Merriam Webster Dictionary, that is were I found a proper definition for this word. I first encountered this word when reading “The Boys Are All Not Alright”  by Michael Ian Black, it was in the second sentence of the article. The author was telling readers about his one- linear, he states ” If you want to emasculate a guy friend” the word emasculate caught my eye, I never heard of this word before. I read the second part of the sentence to get a sense of what this word might of meant, the author was pretty much stating that when taking a guy friend to a restaurant ask him what he wants to order, than when the waitress comes tell the waitress what the guy wants. From my experience I know that guys are always wanting to be in charge, and if a person male or female does something for them, their self esteem lowers down. So I concluded that the definition of emasculate may connect to the weaken a men’s self esteem because something was done for them, and I was close. But now I know what this word means, and I can educate those who do not.

Carnage

The word Carnage is a noun. According to Merriam-Webster, the word means great and usually bloody slaughter. This word can be found in the article ” The Boys Are Not Alright” by Michael Ian Black. The sentence where the word can be found says, “Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School now joins the ranks of Sandy Hook, Virginia Tech, Columbine and too many other sites of American carnage.” This shows that America has become a place of mass slaughter and its because the boys are going through things that they can not talk about to others. Now that I understand the meaning of this word I can use it to when mentioning war. Knowing and understanding this word helps me sound professional when writing and helps show that I know words to replace sad ones.
