Learning new words from your peers every week was the best experience. I learned a lot of new words that I can use now in my daily life. In my High School, on every PTM my teachers told my dad she is doing great but tell her to study new vocabulary words at home to expand her knowledge that will help her in future. I am always lucky when it comes to English teachers/ professors. I have never meet teachers like them before who helped their students in every way specially listen to them what they are trying to tell. Three months passed so quickly and I learned a lot. Glossaries words were very helpful for me. It’s like a “Dictionary”. Also sometimes when I am not able to understand the article I was able to understand it through glossaries because in glossaries we have to explain the article to that from where you found that word, who used this word, when, why. So, Glossaries are the plus point for us in English-1101.

Torment

Torment is a noun. According to Merriam Webster, the definition of  torment is, “extreme pain or anguish of body or mind”. In “Sweat” by Zora Neal Hurston I found this word on the third page. This word was used to explain the torture or pain Delia is going through because of the snake that her husband brings in the house to scared her. She was abused before but now he’s using her fear to torture her.

Sifted

According to Merriam-Webster, the definition of sifted is, ” to go through very carefully in order to find something useful or valuable”. In the article, “A Jury of Her Peers” by Susan Glaspell I found this word on the first paragraph. Sifted is used by Martha when she was working in the kitchen. Like Delia she wants everything organized and perfect. She want her kitchen to be cleaned in every way.

Scornfully

According to Merriam-Webster, the definition of “scornfully” is, ” Felling or showing disgust and anger” Scornfully is an adverb. This word was used in the article, “Sweat”  for Sykes the way he was showing his anger. Sykes always use harsh words and shows anger towards her wife Delia. He always talks to her in a rude way. In this scene, Sykes was talking to her when she came from church.

Squatted

The definition of squatted, according to Merriam-Webster is, ” to cause (oneself) to crouch or sit on the ground”. Squatted is an “transitive Verb”. I found this word in the article, “Sweat” by Zora Neal Hurston on the second paragraph. In this scene, Delia was in kitchen when she used this word squatted. She is very organize so she tried her best to clean everything.

These glossary entries helped expand my vocabulary. It also made “context clues” a little more obvious for some reason. In the past I just read through passages, but in this class I learned to reread things thoroughly which gave away some of the words I did not understand. When I searched the definition online it helps because if it has more than one meaning I was able to discern which definition applied to the context it was in. These assignments also helped me find my dictionary, which was useful in the last few entries. As I read other classmates entries, this helps me understand their way of thinking. This way I can see thing from their perspective. So, not only did I expand my understanding of things, I too expanded my point of views. This can help me in the future to keep an open mind of new understandings. Learning one word can help to understand the whole entire passage. For example, one passage I read talked all about “misogyny” and after I looked it up (even though I kind of had an idea about what it meant) helped me to really see what was trying to be said. These assignments motivate me to continue to investigate new words that I might not understand. Overall, the glossary entries were a big help in my education. I am sure it will be useful for me in future assignments in school.

The glossary assignment is to define a word you are unfamiliar with and explain why the author used that word. At first I had doubts about the glossary assignments. I thought we would just give the definition of the word and a sentence explaining it. Instead it turned into in depth explanations. Usually when i come across a word that i don’t know, I would just skip it. Instead, now whenever i see a word I don’t know, i would search it up online. Sometimes even after searching the definition of the word, I wouldn’t understand it. As English being my worst subject, interpreting the story was very difficult for me. By reading other classmates glossary entry explanations, it made me understand the reading much better. This helped me learn new words and expand my vocabulary in writing assignments. This is a great way to form a habit of searching the words that you don’t understand.

This was my first English class in College. When Professor Garcia first introduced us the glossary assignments, my first initial thoughts were like “is this a joke” because it sounded so easy. To me, finding a word from a text that isn’t familiar to me and writing the definition seemed like what homework would’ve been back in High school freshman year. But it’s a lot more than just a simple homework assignment. It is a very effective and efficient way of improving our vocabulary and enhances our understanding of the text of what the author is trying to provide us. To complete a glossary, we are supposed to find an unfamiliar word from the most recent reading you were issued for class, find the definition of the word, state which sentence was the word included and explain what you believe the sentence means after knowing what the definition is. As mentioned earlier, I believe the assignment was very effective in enhancing my vocabulary, now I can use the new words and effectively use them in future essays, readings, or in everyday speech. Especially when we’re in college, getting closer and closer to the real world, strengthening our vocabulary is a very important thing to keep at.

Abundant

According to Merriam-Webster’s dictionary, abundant is identified as a adjective. It means “existing or occurring in large amounts“. In the New York Times article by Applewhite, it states, “Abundant data shows that they’re reliable, handle stress well, master new skills and are the most engaged of all workers when offered the chance to grow and advance on the job”. The word abundant is used to explain that multiple sources show older workers can offer more than younger workers. The word makes their claim stronger because its supported with data and not just opinion based.

Over the past three months, I was given the assignment to define at least one word, in each of the readings I did. It was a way for me to improve my vocabulary and understand what the author was trying to say. It was especially interesting looking back at what my classmates posted, knowing that they were unsure what a word meant and posted what they learned to. By doing this, I was able to expand my vocabulary and use some of these words in my writing. What ever my classmates wrote about, I made sure to read their posts in case I may have missed anything or was confused. I was also able to think deeper about what I was reading thanks to the new words I learned about. I got to read about other students point of views and how a reading can be interpreted in many ways. This in tern, helped me and my classmates learn from one another and if we were ever stuck,  we would help out one another. This was a good way to look back at the things we learned and our progress over the semester.
