Since the pandemic, we’ve noticed that our First Year Writing students could use some help with “college readiness,” that is, learning what it takes to be a college student. For that reason, we have lessons throughout the model courses that bring up topic to help students succeed, like finding study skills that work for you, or emailing your professors. Many resources on these topics can be found on our Composition Skills Site Student Success page. (Just so you know, this site also has many great grammar and writing resources!)
In 2023, we also did a survey of over 700 City Tech First Year Writing students and found that about 60% of them struggled with procrastination and/or time management. For that reason, we developed the “Procrastination Station” website, which has exercises and readings to help students with these issues.
We also would like to let you know about City Tech’s Student Success Center, which is “dedicated to building relationships with students in order to provide more comprehensive support. Coaches and Coordinators will stick with a student through an acute incident, a semester, or even an entire college career.”
The English Department also has a Writing Center which provides tutoring for students who need help with their writing.
