In my opinion this text is trying to tell us that he thinks all writing is autobiography. He showed many examples of this in the text.He is a writer and educator with an obsession for writing and a concern with the teaching of writing shows how all writing in different ways is autobiographical and that they are brought about to him from the memories of his past.One example of it “Those of us who write have only a few topics. My poems, the novel I’m writing, and some of my newspaper columns keep returning to my family and my childhood, where I seek understanding and hope for a compassion that has not yet arrived”. I believe the genre of the text is an opinion paper because he is stating his opinion.I believe that he said the way an individual makes meaning out of his or her past, present, and future life is what makes it autobiographical .
He didn’t make me change my mind but he gave a good explanation why. He didn’t change my mind because not all writing is like that. I think incorporating autobiography aspects can help my writing because it will give me a better connection to the reader.
