During the first ten minutes of class today, let’s continue your regular summary memo practice and test what you recall from the assigned reading for today. Write a summary memo, save it, and copy-and-paste it into a comment to this blog post. Today’s reading is “Resumes, Applications, and Cover Letters,” http://www.bls.gov/careeroutlook/2009/summer/art03.pdf. Subject:Resumer Application & Resumes
The “Resumes Application and cover letter” shows and tell us that in order to have a unique and build a good strong resume, we will have to make ourselves stand out,and in order to do that we should have a different criteria than the other job applicants. Such as giving them the cover letter on why you would love to work for that specific company. And that each job we apply for we need to make a separate set of resume(well at least the cover letter) show your skills for that specific job. Do not give too much details of unnecessary things that the company do not ask for. Show your computer skills, volunteering places and specific requirements just for the job.

This article talks mostly on the paperwork one needs to get done when applying for a job, mostly notably with resumes, applications and cover letters. There are 3 formats for a creating a resume, chronological, functional, and a combination. You can use whichever will work the best for you as they each have their benefits. A cover letter is done in standard business format and is there so you give more detail for your best qualifications. When it comes to submitting these forms, you can add a bit of flair to them as that can garner interest. One needs to keep in mind however, these a professional documents and are held to certain standards so you shouldn’t go overboard when applying style to them unless the job is a graphic designer. Applications are used in lieu of a resume for certain jobs but they ask for the same basic things you’d put into a resume.

“Resumes, Applications, and Cover Letters,” by Olivia Crosby, gives detailed examples and explanations of how to write a resume and cover letter. It states that a resume should contain some information about the places you have worked at, the skills you possess, and your education. It should also be in chronological form, contain any awards or honors you have received, and any references you may have. The cover letter should be written as a way of showing your enthusiasm for the job. It should be a way of representing you and why this company should hire you as opposed to other candidates. It should point out your skills and why you are the right person to receive the job.
This article as opposed to “Focused Jobseeking: A measured approach to looking for work” by Dennis Vilorio was more specific in what should be included in a resume and cover letter as well as gave multiple examples as to how it should look.

Things this reading had touched on points similar to other readings in the fact that it also suggests gathering facts on the place you are trying to apply to. It also details that depending on the place you are applying you will possibly need to change your resume depending on the situation. It tells you, once again to list contact information because you will need a way for them to keep in contact with you if they need to. Like the other reading it tells you to include special skills or awards and honours you may have received in the past. The reading also touched on cover letters and that the cover letters are a way to display your energy and focus, as well as a way to display enthusiasm. It also introduced 2 other resume styles, a functional and chronological resume. For the project, it could be interesting to incorporate these styles within the resumes for submission.

This article from the bureau of labor and statistics provides us with specific guidelines to help an applicant get past the “30 second test” and be able to get a job interview. As we have read in many of the readings technology has aided employers track and sort hundreds of job applications at a time. This has made the application process more tedious for an applicant as the the expectations of the quality of resume have been raised. With the aid of technology employers only glance at a resume for 30 seconds to decide if they would give the applicant an opportunity to come in and further discuss their skills. There are many useful key points on the reading that help us highlight skills and credentials that would make a resume stand out and get an interview. This article as opposed to the other ones we have read give more in depth and step by step explanations of how each of these three documents should look. One thing that stood out to me was the guidance offered in regards to getting a job application to fill out instead of submitting your own resume. It is stated that an application is a “Resume in disguise”, and we should always look to highlight strong skills even in an application form.

“Resumes, Applications, and Cover Letters” by Olivia Crosby discusses the guidelines for creating an effective piece of writing that will grab the reader’s attention. It is explained how resumes briefly explain who you are, your experiences, your skills, and education. There are three resume formats that may be chosen: chronological, functional, and combination. It is advised to pick one that displays your experiences in the best possible way.
While cover letters are, as stated by Crosby, used to express enthusiasm. You must sell yourself to the reader, explain why you are the best person for the job. Cover letters should always be sent with a resume, otherwise it would be “like starting an interview without shaking hands.”

The articles summarizes how to organize yourself and create a balance structure resume and cover letter to provide to the specific company you are applying for. The article explain how to build a resume listing your skills relating to the current job while the cover letter explains to the hiring manager why the skills you currently have and the past experience you hold can benefit his/her company and that you are the best candidate for the position. The article also explains like the part articles we have read that your resume should be different all the time for different companies you send your resume to. That we should not use the “Shotgun method” and blast the same exact resume to 100 companies and sit and wait for five companies to respond back to you for an interview. The cover letter needs to “wow” the hiring manager when they read it so they can put yours aside from the others.

the article talks about how to write a resume and cover letter. it says that the employer takes seconds to review a resume and it advises to make your resume as short as possible. A cover letter is suggested when applying for a job especially for a person with little or no experience. A good cover letter can get the applicant a better chance of getting an interview, it should include the job you’re applying for and experiences/skills related to the job but also not give too many details.

In this article Olivia Crosby discusses the important takeaways to create or write strong writing that has to grab the attention of the reader. Usually this process takes about 30 second, in this short amount of time reader will decide weather they will call you for interview or not. We have to make sure that we are making resume that error free or any spelling mistakes. But when it comes to format we can use any, as long as we can convey the information very well. We have to organize and gather information about our education, experience and skills. Resume has to explain who you are and give idea to reader. There are 3 formats for resume: chronological, functional and combination. We have to pick one of it for our resume based on our experiences.
When it comes to cover letter according to Crosby we have to like show them our enthusiasm. We have to like explain to reader why we are best for the job that they hiring. Not every company requires cover letter but it is best to send cover letter with resume, it will show they that you are really interested in that job and doing extra work to get the job.

SUBJECT: Resume and Application
The reading “Resumes, Application and Cover Letters” talks about the importance of the having the proper resume for the respective application with the correct form of cover letter pertaining to it. The resume is used to market your abilities. It is use to present yourself to the employer, sort of making a case for yourself. “Why should you be hired?”. The importance of taking note of the application is that you use it to understand how to market yourself to the employer. The application can be used as an outline to fit yourself into the form of it. The cover letter is sort of like the cherry on top as a finish, although it is your introduction. This is used to introduce yourself and give the employers an idea of why you are and why you might be the proper candidate for the job. Your qualification should be stated here and you should be able to sell the idea of you the employer. The cover letter should be edited in order to meet the criteria for the job offer. This goes for the resume as well.
