- Dawoud Bey is a street photographer. He has suffered from a severer hearing problem. Most of his work consists of black people in black and white. His work is pretty interesting because he wants to demonstrate the understanding of black and white portraits but in a more complex way since back then black people don’t have any freedom. Since his work has been popular over the years, he continued his style of photography as of today. The image that gave a huge impression was the underground railroad. In his photographs of the underground railroad, there were human figures and faces. They’re just dark. He uses these images to imagine their perspective when running away during nighttime.
- Carrie Mae Weems is a photographer who uses her own kitchen as a studio. Her work consists of the conflict between families, sexes, monogamy, polygamy…etc. Her project “The Kitchen Table Series” is a series she enjoys doing. She uses her small space to come up with different types of photographs. The image that gave a huge impression is where the women have her head down with alcohol next to her. She seems to be stressed over something.
- Dawoud Bey and Carrie Mae Weems are similar in a way. Both of these photographers use black and white as the main focus in their work. They make each of their photos unique in a way. All of the images they took express human behavior and their emotions. One difference is Dawoud Bey portraits only contains 1 person at a time. On the other hand, Carrie Mae Weems photos consist of many other themes in her work.
Bey certainly started as a street photographer. A street photographer being someone who photographs people in public without their express knowledge. He evolved to work on some very complex projects like Night Coming Tenderly, Black about the Underground Railroad.
The Weems photo you selected does make us feel the pain of the subject. The most important thing a photo can do is make you feel something.
