Raster Vs. Vector and Image Resolution

Notice the differences from left file and right file.

Resources

Here are some notes that you should read to educate yourself in the topic area described above.

Lab

Lab assignments are done during class time.

  • Download these exercises for the Pen Tool in Adobe Illustrator
  • Take a picture of yourself using your phone or the camera on the computer.
  • Open Illustrator
  • Make the file 1024×768
  • Bring your selfie into the illustrator – go to the top menu and select FILE>PLACE and find your picture
  • Trace yourself using whatever tools you can: focus on using the basic shape tools to create your self-portrait
  • Delete the Raster (photo) image from the file before saving. Keeping raster images in a vector file drastically increases file size
  • Save the file as a .ai file
  • The file should be named like this: yourname_hw1.ai
  • Add text using the text tool – your name, your major, what you want to learn this semester

Some examples of Vector portraits.

The original Shephard Fairey (Obey Giant) “Hope” poster.

The meme.

Can you tell the difference between the original and the knockoffs?

Homework Due Next Class:

All work should be submitted by 5:00 pm the day before class.

Each file should be saved according to the following naming convention. i.e., 02_LastName.doc (Microsoft Word).
