I found this text really interesting, and it was easy to follow.
It is mostly about what inspired Malcolm X to want to learn to read and how he went about learning it. It also contains descriptions of historical events.
The text is an excerpt from an autobiography, and a literacy narrative.
He explains that his motivation to start learning began with him wanting to write letters that expressed what he wanted to say.
The article was written to share the beginning and process of how Malcolm X was able to learn how to write and speak. Its intended audience is for those who have not had the same experience.
It is similar to them in that its main focus is on a struggle or experience that the author went through and how they were able to overcome it.
I found the text interesting and motivational.
It’s mainly about Malcom X’s self education during his time in prison (his path on exploring himself as a reader, writer and speaker) which led him emerge as the spoke man of the nation of Islam and as a political activist defending civil as well as other historical racial backgrounds. In learn how to read by Malcolm X states that “His conversion to Islam under the Nation of Islam and his rigorous self-education led him to a life of political activism marked by hatred, violence, and hope” ( The Autobiography of Malcolm X, page 275).

I think the text is interesting. It’s mostly about Malcolm X wrote “learning to read” to inform his readers the hardship faced and his journey to become literate. ” That reading is important to readers lives as it was to his helping now to form their own thoughts and view.” The tone is mostly serious and blunt tone. Its also autobiography. The motivation of Malcolm X is, he struggles with reading and writing. The main reason he decided to learn how to read was because of the letters he received while in prison, from Elijah Muhammad. He wrote this article, as a chance to shape the way he would be perceived by posterity. He intended audience by form both African American and white American. Both he talk about it in the speech. The literacy narrative mixes conversational language, reading all through he casual talk to the audience, and formal language.

This piece is similar to the ones by Tan and Vargas since all three contain a similar idea of “different Englishes” and how reading and writing was able to change how they speak and write to the more formal English used in school & the corporate world.
