I enjoyed reading this essay a lot. I loved how it started out him talking to us about himself. It grasped my attention. He also gave us very important points on how to become better writers throughout reading. One tip I learned on how to read like a writer is to understand that what the writer wrote is what you’re reading as slow as he wrote it. Every word you’re reading is a thought a writer put together and as stated in this essay, one word turns into a sentence and eventually to a book. Another tip is noticing how they wrote in language and punctuation, also implementing that in your writing. I think the writer means to put attention to not only understanding the writing but take away from it when he said “When you read like a writer, you are trying to figure out how the text you are reading was constructed so that you learn how to ‘build’ one for yourself” in his essay. The things you notice like how an author started his introduction, ended with its conclusion, use quotes and examples can make you become a better writer if implementing these techniques into your writing. Mike Bunn’s intended audience would be students or writers looking to improve in this area. His purpose is to teach us about his insight in how we can become better writers through reading. I believe this was written in essay form. I also noticed how it contained subtitles above, I find the reading more appealing this way.

I like this piece because he taught me how to read like a writer. In the past, when we read, we only understood the superficial meaning of the article and did not read it as a writer. This allows me to dig deeper into the meaning of the article and understand who the content of the article is aimed at in the future.

When start reading, ask a few questions to understand the writer’s purpose of writing this article and who the writer wrote this article, and what kind of people he presents to. When reading, I should understand the author’s intentions with the word-by-word and sentence-by-sentence methods just like the writer writing the piece.

I think he means that when you read, you should figure out the deep meaning of the work and understand how the author uses a way to construct his work. Then apply what you have learned to your own works.

I think the purpose of his writing this piece is to make people pay more attention to the use of RRLW, rather than just reading and not understanding the correct purpose of the article. RLW makes you feel the joys and sorrows of the writer and understand the feelings of the writer.

I think the types of genre of this text is essay.

Most of the forms of this essay are when he gives an example or statement, he looks for some evidence from somewhere to support his examples and statements.

I enjoyed this essay. I found very useful and something I would put it in use through my readings as well as writings. As stated “Knowing why the piece was written and who it’s for can help explain why the author might have made certain choices or used particular techniques in the writing…” I totally agree with that too. . when the author said, “When you read like a writer, you are trying to figure out how the text you are reading was constructed so that you learn how to ‘build’ one for yourself” have an idea on how you can also make your writing have the reader putting themselves into your shoes. Make the reading have more sense to it. The authors purpose in writing this piece was to help the reader/audience which is us to reader like a writer. Help us become better writers. the genre of this text is informative.

    1. I liked this piece overall. It was information which is genre/type of style that I like to read, and it also gave me some insights and tips on how to become a better reader/writer.
    2. The observation of word and technique choice is something that is obvious, but I never really do. Words repeated many times is very important and that’s why it’s also good to ask yourself questions during the readings such as “Why is this significant to the main idea?”. Another idea is the implementation of the kind of style of work and allowing yourself to read through pieces and take bits from each to become a better writer. Overall, this passage brought some eye openers and tips I would use going forward.
    3. I think what the author means is that observation is key. As you observe and read thoroughly with purpose, you catch on to certain techniques that a writer may be using. Furthermore, you’re able to use those certain techniques that are used. We are ultimately reading to learn and as we develop into readers who dissect these pieces, we are able to see the different parts and implement them into our own writing styles.
    4. Mike Bunn’s purpose of this piece is to inform us and to help strengthen the readers capacity when it comes reading. His main goal is to help us understand that reading just to complete isn’t the same as reading to learn and if you want to become a good writer you have to learn how to read as one. Overall, I’d say his audience is focused for a more mature group and I think going into college this is a great piece to read to break out of any bad reading habits we developed in our academic careers.
    5. Due to the fact that I was informed on different techniques I’s say this is an informational essay.
    6. I realized that the author used many examples and posed realistic situations for readers to feel engaged and to also be able to understand the point that was trying to be brought acorss.

When the author said, “When you read like a writer, you are trying to figure out how the text you are reading was constructed so that you learn how to ‘build’ one for yourself,” it means when you have the mindset of a writer, you begin to think and plan like a writer. I really liked this piece because it actually explained how to read like a writer and things you should identify before reading any text. This reading will definitely help me when it comes to readings for papers. One of the tips i learned was to ask yourself, “do you know the authors purpose for this piece of writing?”and “Do you know who the intended audience is for this piece of writing?”, before you start reading. Another one was to see what choices the author made and think how you feel about those choices. An idea i learned was making an advantages and disadvantages list, I thought that was a good idea to keep track of the authors choices. When the author says “ “When you read like a writer, you are trying to figure out how the text you are reading was constructed so that you learn how to ‘build’ one for yourself” (74). I think He means that one of the ways you can learn how to write better is by seeing how other authors write to get ideas and see what type what writing you prefer. The author’s purpose for writing this piece was to share what he has learned as a reader and a writer, how he has figured out how to read like a writer. The intended audience was college writers. I think the genre of this piece was a descriptive essay. Lastly this piece was written in sections, explaining each step of RLW.
