I found this text really interesting, and it was easy to follow.

It is mostly about what inspired Malcolm X to want to learn to read and how he went about learning it. It also contains descriptions of historical events.

The text is an excerpt from an autobiography, and a literacy narrative.

He explains that his motivation to start learning began with him wanting to write letters that expressed what he wanted to say.

The article was written to share the beginning and process of how Malcolm X was able to learn how to write and speak. Its intended audience is for those who have not had the same experience.

It is similar to them in that its main focus is on a struggle or experience that the author went through and how they were able to overcome it.

I found the text interesting and motivational.

It’s mainly about Malcom X’s self education during his time in prison (his path on exploring himself as a reader, writer and speaker) which led him emerge as the spoke man of the nation of Islam and as a political activist defending civil as well as other historical racial backgrounds. In learn how to read by Malcolm X states that “His conversion to Islam under the Nation of Islam and his rigorous self-education led him to a life of political activism marked by hatred, violence, and hope” ( The Autobiography of Malcolm X, page 275).

the genre of the text is a literacy narrative, and the tone is a serious tone.

what motivates him to read is The letters he received from Elhajj Mohammed

He wrote this article help change and reshape the distorted history against his race. I think his intended Audience is generally everyone

A simmilarity is that they all at had a specific reason that led them into becoming readers and writers

a difference is that He was born in America a with an English as a first language. His English is not limited instead he mintioned that he is an Articulate.

I think the text is interesting. It’s mostly about Malcolm X wrote “learning to read” to inform his readers the hardship faced and his journey to become literate. ” That reading is important to readers lives as it was to his helping now to form their own thoughts and view.” The tone is mostly serious and blunt tone. Its also autobiography. The motivation of Malcolm X is, he struggles with reading and writing. The main reason he decided to learn how to read was because of the letters he received while in prison, from Elijah Muhammad. He wrote this article, as a chance to shape the way he would be perceived by posterity. He intended audience by form both African American and white American. Both he talk about it in the speech. The literacy narrative mixes conversational language, reading all through he casual talk to the audience, and formal language.

The text Is a autobiography and the tone was honestly

He wrote this text because he wanted to share what he went through and how anything is possible to do. His audience is intended to African Americans

Malcolm X’s literacy narrative similar to from those of Tan and Vargas because he was born in America and he taught himself how to read and tom and Vargas came from another country

I like this text. I thought it was really interesting. I enjoyed reading it.

It’s mostly about Malcolm X Journey of teaching himself how to read and write and how it changed his perspective on many things.

I think the genre of the text is literacy narrative and the tone is somewhat serious because he talks about the importance of education and slavery.

Malcolm X’s motivation to learn how to read was because of the letter he received from Elijah Muhammad.

I think Malcolm X wrote this article so that it can motivate people to become a better version of themself and be more educated. His intended audience is a lot of people and I think another reason is to like to connect with them in a way and communicate with them in a better way using his education.

I think one similarity would be that they all had a struggle that they had to overcome and one difference would be that Malcolm X is a native English speaker who can speak fluently and coherently.

  6. Chandi Craigwell

    1. I really liked this text because he shared some of the many things he has learned form reading and most of that information i never knew so i actually learned some things by reading this text.
    2. It is mostly about how Malcolm X taught himself how to read and write while being and prison. He spent hours reading a day and he enjoyed it. The first time he picked up a dictionary to learned some new words he mentioned that he never knew so many words ever existed.
    3. The genre of this text is a literacy narrative. The tone to me was optimistic.
    4. He was struggling to write letters in simple english while in prison. He didn’t want to write them in slang so he decided to start by reading a dictionary.
    5. I think he wrote this article to show people that you can gain a lot from reading and just because you have a college degree you have more knowledge than everyone else. His intended audience is the black community.
    6. Malcolm X’s literacy narrative is different from those of tan and Vargas because he shared some history that he has learned from reading that he would have never known without be able to read the books he did.
  7. Zeyin Wu

I think this text is fun.

It is mostly about Malcolm X how to learn reading and writing when he is in the prison. He spends a lot of time every day reading books.

I think the genre is narrative essay. The tone is positive.

When he received the letters in prison from Elijah Muhammad.

Malcolm X wants to show us the possibility of gaining more knowledge through his own efforts in prison, such as reading more books. I think his intended audience are all the African American.

Malcolm X’s first language is English, but Tan and Vargas are not.

  8. Muhammad Khalid

It was remarkably interesting reading about someone following his journey through self-education.

This piece is about Malcolm X who despite not going past 8th grade, was able to pursue his purpose by learning to read. He was able to self-educate himself by reading & writing while he was in prison.

The genre of this text is a literacy narrative, while the tone was bullish.

Malcolm X had assorted reasons which motivated him to become a better reader and writer. One of them being, he did not wish to write in slang.

His audience is aimed towards the young African American’s. His message is to fragment the fact, most young African Americans are trying to emulate how “white people” speak and he wishes they accept themselves and their culture.

This piece is similar to the ones by Tan and Vargas since all three contain a similar idea of “different Englishes” and how reading and writing was able to change how they speak and write to the more formal English used in school & the corporate world.

  9. Kiana Rodnell

    A. I think the document was interesting. I feel as if it was very easy to follow and Keep up with the facts and information

B.This article is basically about the path he took to self-educate his-self while being behind bars.

    C. The genre of this text is an Autobiography – The tone of this text is very passionate and very serious.

D.He wanted to learn how to read because while behind bars he was receiving letters and couldn’t spend and letters back, he wanted to be able to express his feelings.

    E. This article was written to share his story and for other people to learn from it. His intend audience is anyone who wants to hear his story, but he wanted people who didn’t know now to read but always wanted to learn.

  10. Shirley Hun

I think the text was very interesting to read.

It’s about Malcom sharing his journey on how he taught himself how to read. Where he experienced many hardships, and it wasn’t easy.

This text seems to be an autobiography and the tone is serious.

Malcom x was motivated to read because he wanted to express himself in his letters. In prison he received letters from Elijah Mohammed, but he was unable to respond to them the way he wanted.

He wrote this article to share his experiences and how he was able to become the person he is. The intended audience is young African Americans.

It’s similar because they all share their own journey on learning how to read and write, Also, the uses of English change their perspective on things.

  11. Diana Caizaguano

I personally found the text very fascinating. It caught my attention since he talks about his journey.

The text is mainly about Malcom X’s obstacles he faced through his life. He unfortunately never went past the eighth grade. Ever since then he basically self-educated himself despite the stuff that was happening.

The genre of the text is a narrative since talks about himself. the tone of the narrative is positive and motivational.

The reason why Malcolm self-taught himself and got that “motivation” was because the time he was in jail he was receiving letters from Elijah Muhammad and he wanted to write back so therefore thats where everything began.

Malcolm X wrote this article to also motivate people that go through something similar as well as to African Americans to prove to them that they shouldn’t give up.

Malcolm X’s literacy narrative is similar to Tan and Vargas since they all mentions the struggles they faced while going through the process of learning a new language as well as speaking it.

  12. Jenna

The text was interesting to read because I didn’t know much about Malcolm X.

The text is mostly about how Malcolm X learned to read and write in prison. He read dictionaries and wrote the new words he learned on his tablet.

The genre of the text is a autobiography. The tone is genuine and serious.

The reason he decided to learn how to read was because of the letters he received while in prison.

He wrote the article to share his experiences. Malcolms intended audience is whoever is interested in his life experiences.

Malcolm’s narrative is similar to the others because they all have something to do with the struggle of reading and writing in English.

    • Jalin Slater

      1. I thought the text was interesting due to Malcolm X teaching himself to read In prison.
      2. This text is about the start of Malcolm X’s relationship with literacy and why he began it.
      3. This text is a n autobiography but this section is a literacy narrative whose tone is positive.
      4. Malcolm X was motivated to learn by a prisoner named Bimbi who had an impressive vocabulary that he owed to his literacy.
      5. Malcolm X wrote this article to inspire others like him to learn how to read and start their own journey into literacy.
      6. Malcolm X’s literacy narrative differs from the others in many ways. The others had an existing relationship with literacy and ended up reflecting on it way later in life but Malcolm X started late
  13. Dillon.D

I thought this text was interesting. This is because he shared some of the many things he has learned from reading.

It is mostly about what inspired Malcolm X to want to learn to read and how he went about learning it. He was able to self-educate himself by reading & writing while he was in prison.

The genre of the text is a literacy narrative, and the tone is a serious tone.

His motivation had begun learning with him wanting to write letters that expressed what he wanted to say.

Malcolm X wrote this text to inspire people that you can gain a lot from reading and just because you have a college degree doesn’t mean you have more knowledge than everyone else. Its intended audience is for those who have not had the same experience.

Malcolm X’s literacy narrative is similar to those of Tan and Vargas because Malcolm was born in America, and he taught himself how to read and tom and Vargas came from another country.

  14. Miguel

I think this text is very interesting and attractive.

This is mainly about his self-education while in prison, he learned how to read all the time. He became an influential person when he came out of prison.

The genre of this text is literacy narrative and the tone is serious.

The letter from Elijah Muhammad motivated him to learn how to read.

I think the reason why Malcolm write this is that he wants to motivate other people like him. His intended audience is all people in the world.

Different because Antonio’s first language is not English so he has to spend more time studying. Different background.

  15. Alex Maldonado

    1. I liked this text because it shows a break through of how rearing saved his life.
    2. This text was mostly about Malcom X and how reading saved him. Many times he’d just stay in his cell and read which was unusual for a prisoner to do. He separated and educated himself and that’s why he had such an impact he did.
    3. This text us a literacy narrative and it’s a reflective, proud and enthusiastic feel I’d say.
    4. The letters from Elijah Muhammad gave him the urge to learn to read and write to respond back. Being able to read those letters made him feel good about himself.
    5. The reason for this text is so that we can understand that we can really learn if we want to. He wanted to learn and read to bad that he closed himself off and educated himself. He worked hard for it and even in the worse of condition such as prison he was able to do it. This can be directed to anyone who feels like they aren’t able to do it and feel down and it’s a sort of motivation to those people not low confidence and resources.
    6. I think each text has its major differences in which Tanya’s a foreign mother and Vargas came from another country so their part was difficult living in the real world and sort of adapting on the spot. Whereas Malcom knew how to speak in English but didn’t know how to read or write. But overall the narratives express the trials that each went through to better understand the language and be prosperous readers and writers.

    1. I found this reading very interesting. He spoke about the challenges he faced throughout literacy. I believe we can all relate to it.
    2. This text is mainly about how literacy impacted him in prison and how it got him through the hardships of his life.
    3. This text is a Reflective Narrative
    4. the letters Malcolm received from Elijah Muhammad motivated him most to learn to write and read.
    5. I believe he wrote this article to inspired other about the power literacy has and how that helped him. His intended audience are those interested in reading and writing and how they can use that into something positive.
    6. This literacy is similar to those we’ve read such as the article of Amy Tan because they all demonstrate how literacy can impact them differently. The relate because literacy both helped them get through a hard time in their life.
