Make Your (Book)Mark!

Greetings from Strand Book Store. This summer, we’re celebrating 90 years of being in business. As part of the celebration, we are asking local designers to get inspired and tell their story by creating a one-of-a-kind bookmark artwork. We’re looking for designs that are fresh and original that embrace the NYC indie bookstore vibe. Entries will be reviewed by design icons Adam J. Kurtz, Paula Scher, and Sunra Thompson, and a winner will be announced in May. The winning design will be printed, shared, posted, tagged, and generally adored all over the Strand!

Submit an original bookmark design for a chance to have your bookmark featured in-store! The contest will be judged by design icons Adam J. Kurtz, Paula Scher, and Sunra Thompson.

Submissions must be 2″x6.5″ with a .25″ bleed at 300dpi. If you use the template provided, make sure that the lines aren’t visible in your final submission. Be sure to read the contest’s terms and conditions here.

Alignment homework example

Attached is a walk-through of a student’s resolution to the Type Specimen homework . . . and some examples of how to move elements to increase alignment.

In the original example, the black box and the Q are centered, but the Q appears to “float” on the top section of the page. The Q is not integrated with the other elements.

By moving some elements and the Q we can create a page where each element feels integrated. The blue rules show alignment.

This Crazy Gorgeous Font Evolves As You Type With It

Oh, and it’s inspired by cockroaches.

This font responds to context, flipping between different letter designs depending on the makeup of a word. It’s chameleonic and mesmerizing to watch in action ― and the result can make anyone’s typing look like the work of a practiced designer.
