Homework #3: Walker Evans’ Subway Portraits

The photographs Evans had taken are interesting because you can see the people’s facial expressions of what they are going through during the Depression Era. During the Depression Era, he was trying to capture the people’s expressions, instead of having them fake a smile just because there is a camera in their face. At the same time you can see the discomfort of some people in the photographs. I can see some similarities between the riders’ expression during the Depression Era and today ‘s riders. Whenever I am on the train going to school, you can see that the riders are expressionless. Maybe due to being early in the morning and the people are tired. You also can see that many people are on their phones reading, playing games, or listening to music.
