Rachie: Food or Coffee? | Civil War

Food, of course!

No, but seriously. I would definitely give up coffee. Coffee gives me the rumbles and makes me super sleepy! So, I find it shocking how coffee “fueled” the Civil War. I have never heard of this before! Soldiers drank coffee to stay warm, as well as to pump themselves up for the fight ahead of them. A Civil War soldier’s diet was also very plain, according to Avey’s Civil War Cooking: What the Union Soldiers Ate. Their food did not focus on either flavor or variety. I am surprised how they survived on such plain food. I would get tired of it if it was the same meal every single day. But I wouldn’t mind it if I can eat chips every day! (I can’t live without chips, specifically Ruffles Sour Cream and Onion Flavored Chips!)

yum.

I also prefer food over coffee. If I had a choice, I would give up coffee instead of food because from my opinion coffee acts as a stimulant, which only gives you a boost for a quite amount of time. But it was shocking to hear that coffee makes you super sleepy !
Ruffles sour cream and onion flavored chips are one of my favorites !

I agree with you, I don’t understand how coffee is prioritized over the actual food. They focus was mainly on the coffee that there is little to no variations to the foods.
