Reading about the soldiers and how they ate during the Civil War has made me think of one word, limited. But when I say limited I mean everyday of the same food and the amount they each got. What was very interesting was the fact that the soldiers were inexperienced in cooking because they we’re accustomed to having women prepare them food. The food they ate had horrible taste and was very low quality plus to add they had to dip crackers into water or coffee to make it easier to eat. As for the coffee soldiers loved the taste and helped them stay awake when working long shifts. But later two privates who were into the art of cooking were placed into 100-man company and made the high skilled one the “cook major”. If I had to choose over the many different types of food/drinks that I couldn’t live without then I would have to choose coffee. The fact that coffee wakes me up and helps me stay on my feet on tasks that need to be done helps me.
