Reflection on Sweat

It was an amazing experience to go and watch a broadway show and since it was my first time watching a broadway show I was very excited about it. The show was really amazing and had a really good message. I was kind of lost in the beginning of the show but later on I understood it. Each and every character played a very crucial rule in the play and especially Cynthia was my favorite. The play left us with an open ended question that how did Cynthia ( Jason mother) got poor when she was a supervisor and she had the edge over other employs but the show really amused me.

Two Events this Week: Know Your Rights and Literary Arts Festival

Apologies for interrupting the flow of responses to Sweat, but there are two events I wanted to let you all know about this week.

  1. Immigration: Know Your Rights Forum: Tomorrow, Tuesday, April 25th directly before our class from 12:45 – 2 pm  in N119.  During this time we will provide training on  immigration rights and interaction with police and Immigration and Customs Enforcement.  We will share information about resources on campus, CUNY-wide, and in the community, and we will discuss ways that we can become further involved and mobilize on immigration issues at CUNY and beyond. The event is open to the CUNY community. Please spread the word!  Flier available here:Know Your Rights
  1. Literary Arts Festival

Reflection on Sweat

This was my first time seeing a Broadway play and honestly it’s not as boring as I thought it would be. the whole experience was just so different. If anything it caught my attention. Seeing a movie and seeing a live play shows you just how hard actors work to stay in character. The play was very diverse and it included people of many different backgrounds. Also it is about the work force which is a very current issue being that people find it hard to find jobs. I have seen companies lay off workers because they were under new managers so I’ve had some experience with how things go afterwards.

this was my second experience of seeing a play. but with sweat, its was a pretty good one I didn’t expect it to be intense with so much going on. the actor made one feel a part of the situation which was a bit confusing at first but later on it was more understandable on what was going on. the play contribute a broader conversation about the social issue in the U.S like family problems, job loss, and immigrants.

Reflection in Sweat

I was already excited about seeing Sweat that morning. I always been interested in theater and it amazes me.  This play had me dying of laughter in the beginning just because of the language and energy I received from the actors. Overall I believe the play was fantastic and it held a lot of meanings and lessons. I can say I learned from this play and it will receive a 5 star from me. This play truly displayed today’s problems with society from “immigrants” to job and family issues.

This is my first time seeing a play on Broadway. In the beginning I thought the play was going to be boring, but I ended up enjoying everything about it. I liked the plot of the play, how the characters were so engaged in their roles, and the scenery. The play reflects on issues in the current United States such as racism, recession, and economic inequality. This is shown in the play when Jessie and Tracy were locked out of the factories making them economically unstable, while their friend Cynthia became the supervisor. Racism arises in the play afterwards, when Tracy mentioned that the only reason Cynthia got the job was because she was “black” and how immigrants are coming into the country and taking away their jobs.

Reflection on Sweat

Seeing Sweat was a very good introduction to seeing plays on Broadway and made in interested in attending more plays in the future. Overall the play was amazing and the actors were great. The play dealt with topics that we are facing today and how divided our country is on many topics. This play focuses on the issues of race and jobs, topics that are being discussed by many politicians and citizens in the country. It shows how one event, in this case losing your job, can change the way you see those who were once your friends or allies and can change your ideology of what’s right and wrong. The character of Oscar being shown as the scapegoat to why the other characters lost their jobs gives a perfect example of how the country is today blaming immigrants for America’s problem, making what was once a personal issue to a public issue. This hit home with me because being a Latino right now in the United States makes me and my family scapegoats and it’s a issue my race would have to face till it fades away.

Reflection on Sweat

I felt that the play, Sweat shows a broken America and how we have never really changed from it. The actors, stage development, music, even the smells added to the whole aesthetic of the play. It allowed the audience to be immersed into the play, to feel as each character did. It also presented the audience with a sense of “evidence” to what happened to millions of families as jobs were being taken from them and given to people outside their own country. Within this overarching issue the play managed to also show that the underbelly of the issue seems to be race. The racially targeted comments to Cynthia after she got her promotion and the shift in her friendships; the comments towards the Latin American groups and by making a bartender- Oscar, Latin American, shows the audience the innocence to the two characters actions, as well as the racial issues being built into American history. Middle America today seems to believe that the color of one’s skin and the ethnicity presented by ones features is why they (Middle Americans) don’t have jobs- these ideas are greatly showed in the characters- Tracey and Jason. Their aggressive beliefs and actions shows the worst of what America has become. Furthermore by leaving the play on a cliffhanger the audience is left wondering and wanting more. It opens a conversation by forcing the audience to actually think about how the play could have ended, straying to the idea that America today is no different.
