Josue, This is good. I think it would be beneficial to show the environmental benefits (and harms of not changing) in more illustrated detail. That’s not emphasized much. Even subtly, counter arguments aren’t really addressed. I like what’s here, though, and the writing is good.

I know I’m not the only one who worries about our financial situation. While the prices of rent, housing, gas, and interest rates are increasing, it is now becoming more difficult to live a stable life

I’ve always dreamed about living a wealthy lifestyle but with where our economy is heading, I don’t think I can handle a basic way of living. For example, imagine living in NYC. You live in a two-bedroom apartment in Brooklyn that your paying $2,500+ (Minimum).

Your living expenses are close to $2,000 (Food, groceries, essentials, transportation, personal expenses,). In this situation, you would have to make at least $4,500 a month to just provide for yourself.

This doesn’t include having a family or partner, having fun, car expenses, and anything else that you may want to spend your money on.

A 100-150K salary is becoming the new 70/80k and ever since the COVID pandemic, there have been no signs of a deflation.

With the U.S. sending billions of dollars of aid for war across the country, Americans are struggling with their finances to make a living, and debt has become normalized in American households.

It may seem as if this is an everlasting issue but there is a way we can fight this, and it doesn’t mean we have to become millionaires.

Financial Literacy. Enforcing a new curriculum in our education system. Financial Literacy is the possession of skills that allow people to make smart decisions with their money. Educating our youth about money management will provide people with skills to make smart financial decisions and avoid debt.

In a world where things just get more expensive, financial literacy is a must! Our financial situation is not only determined by how much money we make, its also about how we spend our money. If you’re in high school right now, how financially educated would you consider yourself from 1-10?

If you already graduated, think back to when you finished high school.Did you at least have a basic understanding of Credit cards, Interest rates, Mortgages, investments, taxes, budgets, retirement plans, savings. Did you know about the consequences of carrying debt and the importance of credit cards?

I didn’t, and in fact, I made a couple mistakes that could have damaged my credit score when I first applied for one.

Credit Cards- Credit limits, Interest rates, Fees, Credit score, Credit usage,

Budgeting- Planning, keeping track of your money, expenses

Savings- 401k accounts, pensions, interest rates, High yield savings account,

Taxes- Income taxes, corporate taxes, property taxes, tax returns, sales tax, capital gains

This is just a brief overview of what’s reviewed in financial literacy. Having a basic understanding of these financial literacy components at a young age can go a long way and help people avoid debt and build a financial status.

Taking Financial Literacy courses will shape our youth for success in the future. Today, 75% of American Teens lack confidence in their knowledge of personal finance and Americans owe around 1.04 trillion dollars in credit card debit.

These statistics need to change and enforcing financial education in high school can make a huge difference.

Good work on this thread! You covered a lot of important points. I agree that if we want to prepare people for financial success and independence we have to teach these things. I don’t think that’s the current goal, however. Hopefully I’m wrong on that one, but I see financial institutions profiting substantially from the public’s ignorance on these matters. In any case, good work.

Shivam, This is good. I’m surprised there’s no photo or photos of actual coral reefs and the life they support because it’s so beautiful and amazing! My other comment is that the call to action, the recommendation of what we should do is not separated and highlighted, but at the end of a long list of things that a viewer might or might not get to. Still, it’s an important topic and you communicate your research effectively with good writing.

Christopher, Your project is well-written and integrates the research well. It’s a little short and could go beyond surface of the issues related to the topic, but it at least a primer. Interviews can have a wide range of depth and still be accessible to lay-people. This is good work, though.

Ashlyn, this is a good infographic. There’s serious debate over whether or not newborns need Hep B vaccines, especially if the mother tests negative. Just saying the CDC has already addressed all concerns and will continue to do so doesn’t reflect or recognize any legitimate concerns with the current vaccine schedule, or any of the serious side effects that do occur. This could be up on a wall in a Dr’s office, but for this assignment I think it ignores opposing views.

Timothy, You have a lot of small print here which makes it challenging to take in for a casual viewer. It’s more of an essay transposed onto a graphic, but I think it’s generally good. Saying we need to work together and have collective action is so general. What are you talking about? What can people do to make a difference? Raising awareness is a necessary first step, but be more specific in an actionable step forward.

  3. Kawthar

Hello, My name is kawthar Alsahqani and I’m a freshman at New York City College of Technology. I’m an 18 year old woman who grew up in Yemen for the first 10 years of my life but has been in brooklyn since 2016. Now and  most of my childhood I have always been living in a full house. A house full of siblings, cousins, aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews. I’m the last sibling of 6 sisters and one brother. I’m grateful to have so many nieces and nephews to spend time with and to create happy memories. To teach them as they grow up and to show them love. Having a big family is never having a boring day.

This topic I will be sharing for the love I have for children and for a better future for all. Kids are the future so plan the best for them. Their childhoods, schools, and teenage years are their moments that they will always remember and are important because their self-identity, decisions, emotions, and social relationships are all impacted by those times. So it’s important for parents to pay close attention to those moments and take their role seriously in a society that’s constantly changing.

Don’t be a selfish and ignorant parent making decisions for your kids based on your own desires without considering the consequences. Just because society has become something doesn’t mean you force your children into that change or group. Sometimes parents live through their kids’ childhood to fix the wrong doings they were facing at their time but don’t realize that’s completely wrong. Guide your children to feel, experience and make their own mistakes without forcing your desires into their life.

The topic I’m focusing on is “What Has Happened To Parents’ Authority Over Their Children?”

Parents having authority over their own children is a right to fight for in society now. Society gave parents the authority over children in matters of education, language, time, devices, bedtime, religion, food, mentors and many more. This right of the parents usually lasts until children hit the legal age of 18 . However, this power of parents is losing its purpose slowly but has a great impact.

Parents are letting society and influencers impact their decisions on their children. Some parents feel under pressure to follow social norms, regardless of the potential benefits or downsides for their children.

Public schools sense that because parents willingly send their kids to their teachers that they have the right to let the children be exposed to topics without the parents’ consent. Parents send their kids to be educated about history, literacy, math, to be critical thinkers, and think about the great future ahead of them rather than teach about identity, pregnancies, and religion.

Public schools currently perceive the authority over the children which is leading to mental and emotional harm by encouraging kids to question their fundamental identities, which creates confusion. Being encouraged to self-select the bathroom and preferred pronouns they use, regardless of whether those match their biological sex, students as young as age five are taught that their gender is flexible and up for their understanding. “Starting as early as preschool and kindergarten, taxpayer money is funding radical sex education content. Just one example is the Gender Unicorn, a purple cartoon image featuring hearts and rainbows…The character is designed to look endearing to young children, similar to the popular Barney or Boz. However, this unicorn walks students through self-selecting their gender identity, their gender expression, the gender they’re physically attracted to, and the gender they’re emotionally attracted to. Each option includes not only categories such as women/men and feminine/masculine but also “other.” Even their “sex assigned at birth” is open to interpretation — it includes female and male, but also “other/intersex” Karid D. Ingramah. Sad to say but these are the open options kids are given. These kids are dealing with such important things at a very young age and don’t even know what they are getting themselves into. They are too young to be given those options. Also,Teachers are giving their students the option of changing their names or pronouns without asking the parents if that’s okay. That’s disrespecting those parents who are religious and believing in the creation of God. The creation of God, in the sense of loving and appreciating how everyone was created and meant to be that way. You don’t need to believe in God to be thankful for the way you were born and created.

Those parents who approve of letting teachers expose all kinds of topics to the students in a sense that will help them explore all the sides of the world and options, should be aware that could damage not only their childhood but the future as well. There is limited information young children should be given because they need to learn themselves by experiencing and learning by making mistakes of their own. If children’s  mistakes are because decisions were forced upon them by adults than not it’s a mistake of their own. That’s a fault of the adults giving them more than they could handle without caring or purposely ignoring the consequences the decisions will lead to the children’s future.

For instance as we see parents or adults on social media showing us that they gave an option or encouraged children to change their actual gender is completely inappropriate. That’s a decision that would harm the children as they become adults because changing your gender is not just simply from being called a  he to a she.  They are influenced to fully transform by surgeries. It’s damaging the options they could have when they are fully adults. However, important childhood moments are when kids or teenagers choose the wrong friends and realize those friends weren’t the right people for them or when children change their favorite color from green to yellow because their friend and mom also like that color too but later realize green is actually their favorite color. These memories are the moments that are considered when children are having their own experiences, making mistakes and learning from them on their own. Don’t give children more pressure than what they already feel.

The Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act of 1974, which gives parents access to their children’s school records, and the equal protection clause of the 14th Amendment are both violated by our public schools’ overreach and dishonesty. “ In California, students who qualify can go to a Planned Parenthood clinic on their school campus to receive a prescription for hormones of the opposite sex (i.e., estrogen for males and testosterone for females)” Keri D. Ingraham. This painful life changing decision is being made without a constant of the parent. Parents are unaware if their minors are tremendously deciding a life changing choice. This option for students is also free and without any paper signing making it hundred percent easier for them to access. This conveys that the purpose of parents having the right to make decisions for their children is fading away. Parents are losing legal rights over their children because schools are too comfortable now.

Ways that Schools are far too comfortable going beyond what is necessary is when it comes to giving and showing the right books for children. Children’s books are changing to topics that are not appropriate for children to hear. There are many books that have been banned because of the wrong stories mentioned specifically to students. The books that authors chose to write for the youth of the next generation about irrelevant topics don’t support the purpose parents send their kids to school.  There is “674 banned book titles (41 percent) addressing LGBTQ+ themes or have main characters or important famous secondary characters who are LGBTQ+ (this includes a specific subset of titles for transgender characters or stories)… And 357 banned book titles (22 percent) contain sexual content of varying kinds, including novels with some level of description of sexual experiences of teenagers, stories about teen pregnancy, sexual assault and abortion as well as informational books about puberty, sex, or relationships;” Pen America.

The idea of book bans has been a debate for many years and that shows that the schools purpose of teaching the basics of what’s expected is being pushed off. Pressure by those who are forgetting the goal of schools and those who are forgetting what kids growing up and learning themselves is, are getting in the way schools are doing their job right and causing topics to go beyond necessary.

In a poll done by NPR, shows the parents disapproval of what schools are teaching. The 1,007 parents of school-aged children who participated in the nationally representative survey are a follow-up to a comparable study that NPR and Ipsos performed approximately a year ago. In both surveys, parents were asked about the pandemic’s effects on their kids’ academic and social development as well as how their schools were doing at the time. Two different parents commented ” She also doesn’t approve of her son, who is in high school, being asked what pronouns he prefers to use” and a dad also said that “He wishes his son’s high school went more in depth and taught more about the nation’s history of racism and oppression”. Parents having to remind schools that the teaching of students is not done correctly determines how society is changing the schools’ purposes.

School and society are forgetting that parents have authority over their children, which is leading to children having regretful life results. When school and society are pressuring and influencing children at a very young age without the consent of a parent or awareness is not only a disrespect to the parent but it’s damaging the child’s life.

A youtube interview by Jordan B Peterson with Chloe Cole, reflects the result of those who deny parents having rights for their children and parents being ignorant about the child’s future. Chloe was a woman who at the age of 12 was influenced by society to transform into a male but her detransitioning occurred at the age of 17. Her story was heartbreaking seeing the regret and painful life damage she has to live with now. She mentioned in her story

Chole: The problem with me starting it was not only that I couldn’t really constant, I couldn’t really fathom the full picture of things. You know, I’ll never be able to breast-feed. I’ll never have that erogenous sensation in my Chest back.  I do hate to speak about it, but I am experiencing sexual dysfunction at the age of 18. That’s something that women usually go through When they’re in their 40s and 50s. How was I supposed to know?

Kawthar: Her selfish, ignorant parents and society have damaged this woman’s future. This is the disappointing outcome when people are trying to change the purpose of children living through their own childhood freely. Chloe is one of many who regret making life decisions at a very young age. Also seeing that many more children are transitioning like Chloe is upsetting. If ignoring that many young children could end up being like Chloe and not have a problem with parents supporting schools, overreaching is a sad and disappointing outcome.

I’m concerned because, as an aunt, sister, and woman of religious beliefs, I see my nieces and nephews being pressured and influenced with beliefs held by others at school. One day my 10 year old cousin came from school saying that the teacher let a 4th grader come to the class and present that there is LGBTQ+ counseling and support if they need it. What if  a christian student went home and told their parents my teacher is mentioning the Islamic religion and has counseling and support if we are interested. As a young student they might go to those counseling and support not knowing what they are signing up to. If religion is not taught in school then LGBTQ+ topics and inappropriate context shouldnt be either because beliefs come from religion. When the students grow up and know what life is really all about they will have the ability to be whatever they want. Why force it on them at a very young age? Why are teachers feeling the need to put them in a group or bring beliefs into the classrooms? Why do parents have to worry about the topics mentioned in schools in today’s society? What has society become?

I truly want this problem to be fixed. The solution won’t just happen overnight but it could be fixed eventually. The first and most impactful step is schools. Schools are children’s foundation to life. Schools shape their future. We need schools to focus on their purpose and better do their job. We still have issues with math word problems being offensive and arguments about topics of history that should or shouldn’t be mentioned. Bullying just got worse because there are more problems to bully about. Schools are getting more dangerous and unsafe. Why not fix those problems instead of adding new ones?. Teachers should stick with the topics including the main subjects parents are expecting their kids to learn and avoid fixing beliefs with doing their job right. It would be impossible for teachers to be completely neutral but nowadays teachers feel that their side or opinion is always right to mention to children. If your opinion doesnt involve school topics then it should be mentioned. Beliefs that mentally and physically change a child’s body or future shouldn’t be that comfortable for childrens to hear by their teachers. If teachers are not allowed to force or give advice why a religion is better than why do they feel the need to tell children they could change their  gender, pronouns or even their bodies?. Parents should try to build the best future for their children. Parents need to know what’s happening in schools. What are their children learning about and what’s impacting their decisions.

Thank you for your time. Hope you consider these thoughts of mine and questions and make a change. Have a great day.

Interview:SOCIAL MEDIA: FROM LIKES TO POSITIVE IMPACT

    ON THE WORLD

(I): Today, we have the pleasure of sitting down with Mr.Bukari, an individual concerned about the performance of social media in the world  . We’ll be discussing the impact of social media, exploring both its positive and negative influences on individuals and society.

I: Mr.Bukari, thank you for joining us. To begin, can you share your idea on how social media has evolved and shaped our lives?

Mr. Bukari: Social media has become a somewhat important part of our lives, connecting age and background It has allowed accessibility, bringing people closer to current events and global issues. Through platforms like Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram, we can connect with diverse communities and share information.

I: You’ve touched on the positive aspects. How has social media been a force for good in terms of information spreading and community building?

Mr.Bukari : Social media serves as a global stage for information sharing. It’s a powerful tool to spread awareness about crucial issues. During movements like Black Lives Matter, hashtags such as #blackouttuesday played a big role in making people’s voices louder and bringing attention to the struggles of black Americans. Additionally, social media has contributed to community building by bringing like-minded individuals to come together for positive action, such as fundraisers to support victims of social issues.

I: For sure social media has been a contributor for positive change. However, there’s a growing concern about its impact on mental health. Can you describe more on the negative aspects?

Mr.Bukari: Yes. While social media connects us globally, it can also disconnect us from reality. The positive content often showcased can lead to unrealistic comparisons, and adding on to dissatisfaction of yourself and, in some cases, contribute to mental health issues like anxiety and depression. This shows that excessive use of social media can turn into an addiction, where individuals find themselves trapped in a cycle of endless scrolling and engagement.

I: what solutions would you propose to mitigate the negative impact of social media?

Mr.Bukari: One crucial solution is encouraging users to limit screen time. Actively participating in offline activities, like meditation, it can help break the cycle of constant comparison and promote mental well-being. Additionally,  being aware of the content consumed can foster a healthier relationship with social media.

I: how do you see the role of social media in shaping societal narratives and helping withpositive change?

Mr.Bukari: Social media is a bigt tool for change. It can shape narratives, raise awareness, and be a big source for communities. By using social media we can continue to address social issues and have more focusd on positive transformations. It’s about striking a balance between staying informed and maintaining our mental well-being.

I: In conclusion, what message would you like to convey regarding the responsible use of social media?

Mr.Bukari: My message would be one of balance and mindfulness. Social media, when used responsibly, is a force for good. Let’s us its power and its potential to spread awareness, support positive initiatives, and its connections. But, let’s also remember to take breaks, engage in offline activities, and prioritize our mental health.

I: Thank you Mr.bukari, for sharing your insights on the impact of social media. It’s been a thought-provoking conversation that encourages us to broaden our eyes to this digital landscape with mindfulness and responsibility.

As we conclude this interview, Mr.bukari leaves us with a powerful reminder that the influence of social media, both positive and negative, lies in our hands. It’s a tool that can shape the world, and how we use it determines the impact it has on our lives and society.

    • AbubakarB

Social media has changed the way we live and interact with the world, some of us use social media for entertainment, others use it to spread awareness and some people use it as a way to spread false information or post their views on things anonymously. It exposes us to life outside our environment and teaches us more about what is going on in the world, It can both positively or negatively affect us by having our own opinions on whatever is being seen or heard on the internet. In this op-ed, I will discuss the impact of social media and how it has mostly a good influence on us the people while also describing how it can contribute negatively to society.

Social media is very accessible to people of all ages and backgrounds. As social media continues becoming more and more frequently used each generation more people are in tune with current events that occur, We use social media as a way to receive and distribute news, updates, and information that are currently taking place, and it has made it possible to shrink down the world to where we can interact with different people of different background and cultures. We can connect to people who have the same interests as us to where we can positively contribute to our own society as well, an example would be social media can be used to “shared fundraisers to support the families of victims of police violence”(dmt.,2022). This is a way to support justice especially if it is coming from your community.

We are able to raise awareness about global issues and conflicts that are happening such as the black lives movement and the foreign problems that are continuing in Gaza. Without social media, the whole world would be clueless about this information. During the black lives movement, people have been using hashtags as a way to contribute to justice for black Americans, hashtags such as #blackouttuesday and #black lives matter have been used widely to spread awareness of how black Americans are struggling and being mistreated.”Through the feature of sharing another user’s Instagram post, it makes it easily accessible for your followers and viewers to access information about small businesses, news stories, and ways to get involved”(Coronado,2022). Something as small as sharing a post, liking a comment or even just viewing a post has made it possible for the black live movement protest to become a worldwide topic. This has made it possible for Common people on the ground to take on the role of frontline reporters, giving updates in real-time while conflicts were going on. Twitter and other social media platforms became essential information sources in areas where access to traditional media was restricted.

While social media is always influencing us to have a positive impact on the world we also need to acknowledge the damage social media can have on us mentally. Social media, sadly, is a way for people to escape reality and find themselves trapped in a bubble when they try to interact with society. What most see on social media is mostly positive, whether it is people living successfully, living their lives, or someone achieving a certain accomplishment too much of this can cause an addiction to social media where you would sit for long periods scrolling through videos, comments, and texts that can seriously affect your mood and mental health. Too much social media will make you compare your life more to whatever your viewing, this itself is one easy way anxiety builds up slowly. One way to solve this is to have less screen time and start being more active offline, an example would be meditating where you can sit and relax without having to feel the need to compare yourself to others and also help your mental health.

In conclusion, the media is an incredible place to spread mindfulness about different issues. It reaches people worldwide, also has openness, and its availability can help improve the people and different communities to spread data and have a drive for change. Whether it’s bringing issues to light about friendly problems, natural worries, emergencies, or other conflicts, posting gives a stage for voices to be heard and the spread of a problem to pick up speed. The idea of sharing different kinds of content helps with the reason why social media has a positive influence on information sharing, making it an important way for people to want change when it comes to a major problem.
