To-Do Before Class

Complete the following activities and post your introductory response:

  1. PLAY with the website. You can’t break it. Honestly. I’ve tried. Click around on all the tabs. See whatā€™s there! Weā€™ll be doing a great deal of work here this semester, so make yourself familiar with the site
  2. READ/ WATCH:
  1. WRITE: a new post: Start with one word that describes how youā€™re feeling about this course and college in general as we get started. No need to explain, but you can if you want to.Ā
  • Talk about your study skills. What works for you and what doesnā€™t? What do you need to learn how to do better?
  • Talk about your worries, concerns, reactions to the readings and/or to being a college student… whatever you want to. No censoring… except keep it kind of clean, please ;-). And
  • Add a picture that means something to you, and explain why you chose it — why does it mean something to you?
  • Check back in and comment on your peersā€™ work!

To-Do After Class

READ: ā€œHow to Read Like a Writerā€ by Mike Bunn

WRITE:  On the website, write a post of at least 300 words discussing the following questions. You can also post the picture of your notes from the reading in this same post:

  • In his article, Mike Bunn writes ā€œYou are already an author.ā€ Heā€™s talking to you. Ā What do you think he means by this? What are some of the things you write already?Ā  (Hint: ā€œNothingā€ is not an acceptable answer.) Think of all of the ways you already use words in your everyday life. Thatā€™s authorship! How will that existing expertise help you in your college reading and writing career?
  • Was there anything you noticed in Bunnā€™s article that you would like to try to do in your own writing? What, in particular? Please be specific!

    -Hopeful

As I begin this college journey, I feel a sense of hope. Hope for new experiences, hope for growth, and hope for facing the new challenges that will come my way. Iā€™ve always believed that hope is the spark that keeps us moving forward, and right now, itā€™s the light guiding me toward my goal.

When it comes to studying, I work best with structure and routine. Setting aside specific times to study, breaking down tasks, and using a combination of handwritten notes and digital tools keeps me organized and focused. However, I struggle with procrastination, especially when the workload feels overwhelming. I need to learn to manage my time more effectively, avoiding last-minute rushes that often lead to stress and poor performance, causing my emotional outbursts.

College is a whole new world for me, and with that comes a lot of worry and uncertainty. Will I be able to keep up? What if I donā€™t do as well as I hope? Iā€™m concerned about balancing academics with social life and self-care, and I know I need to find a way to navigate these aspects of college life without burning out.

I chose this image of a sunrise over the ocean because it symbolizes new beginnings and endless possibilities. This image reminds me of the journey Iā€™m startingā€”sometimes calm, sometimes stormy, but always moving forward. Every day is an opportunity to learn, grow, and start fresh, no matter what challenges arise.

    Strange

I think Public school made me used to being spoon-fed mindless information for up to 6-7 hours a day. Now being in college, it feels a bit strange, as I now have a lot less than my plate. Iā€™m used to being bombarded with things to read/study/do, but the Professors at city tech arenā€™t really forcing you to do anything. Sure you donā€™t have to do the recommended homework for math the whole semester, but the one thatā€™s gonna suffer is YOU the student. Not the Professor.

Weirdly enough, not being forced to do anything motivates me to do it with all my effort. At the end of the day, Iā€™m in college for myself.

This image perfectly represents how I felt the first 3 days of college, I have a lot more time now. So I dedicate it by studying, managing my time, and making appointments so I donā€™t stay behind.

One word that describes my feelings about college is nervousness. The main reason I’m feeling nervous is that I just started college and am still trying to get used to the whole switch from high school to the college level, and I feel unprepared. My studying skills would be finding somewhere to sit loud or quiet. I work well with both amounts of noise. I have my notes listed in a format on a Google Doc or a paper on which I wrote my notes. Then, I would start studying them while listening to music to help me focus more on my studies. I need to learn proper vocabulary to make my writing seem more interesting and striking to whoever reads it. Also, it helped me learn how to format an excellent college-level essay or write in general for whatever may come in the future. My concerns about college are the amount of work I would be getting and dealing with the strict deadlines depending on the class. Still, I hope to get used to it.

I chose this image because it reminds me never to give up and always to keep trying, whether in sports or academics. After all, always trying my best can lead to great things, and I must always balance what I do. (I am number 24.)

    Anxious.

College is a whole new world in itself and while that can be very exciting, it is can also be very nerve wracking. This is essentially the start of the rest of our lives, it is where we are preparing for the future that we desire for ourselves. Change is inevitable, and I have always been a person that is a little to hesitant to change. With all this in mind, I can’t help but feel a little anxious, however I am more than willing to push through and overcome any uncertainty.

Regarding studying and the methods that work for me, I would say I use a lot of active recall. I like to test myself on the material I am reviewing to ensure that I am actually retaining this information. I’ve realized that only reading the material/lecture is not enough, and the usage of flashcards is the most beneficial for me. I also enjoy studying with my friends and hearing their input on the topics that we are learning, to further broaden my perspective. One area I need to improve is my time management, as I often overestimate how much time I have.

For the most part, I am excited to see where this journey will take me and see how much I can challenge myself. I am fearful however, about the difficulty of certain courses and my reaction as I often feel heavily overwhelmed when I am unable to complete a task successfully on the first attempt. I try to remind myself that it’s okay to not succeed on the first try and will continue to do so until the thought of failing does not scare me anymore.

I chose this image because it signifies family, and I am a very family-oriented person. In times of distress and in times of excitement, it is my family who I turn to for support. I dedicate my triumphs to them, as I owe everything to them.

    Constant.

the reason this word describes me is, because I have been constant this last two years. I came to this country without any English, and now I can see the results after two years of being constant with myself, it wasnā€™t an easy process which I struggled everyday asking myself myself what i was doing wrong or what I was not doing at all. I got to think that learned a new language wasnā€™t for me, but being constant and trying and learning every day helped me to understand and speak this language that wasnā€™t easy at all.

when it comes to studies, Iā€™m not a study person, I donā€™t like studying, but when If it is something that is going to benefit me, I always do my best or whatever task that has to be done. Iā€™m college because I want to become a professional, and make my parents proud of me, but mainly, be proud of myself for doing all the effort that I have been doing.

I think college itā€™s a new whole process, and it wonā€™t be easy as i thought. Iā€™ll be happy of learning new skills and all the experience that Iā€™m going to learn here, as I said already, college will benefits my future and what I love doing(cooking).

this image has nothing to do with me or if represents me or not. I just feel that would be me when I get my diploma after graduating from college, I feel like thatā€™s the priority for now in my life, and I hope do it with my best.
