The HSB Turning Torso

The HSB Turning Torso is a very unique building built in sweden. Officially opening on August 27, 2005 the buildings unique shape showcases an exceptional twisitng motion. The tower reaches a height of 623 feet. In total it has 54 stories. The lower two segements of the building is meant as office space, but the upper segements are 147 luxury apartments.

Located in Malmo, Sweden it is the tallest building in scandinavia. In all it is the second tallest residential building in europe. The design is based on a sculpture by Calatrava called Twisting Torso. The Twisting Torso sculpture is a white marble piece based on the form of a twisting human being. It uses nine segments of five-story pentagons that twist as it rises, the topmost segment is twisted ninety degrees clockwise with respect to the ground floor.

Each floor consists of an irregular pentagonal shape rotating around the vertical core, which is supported by an exterior steel framework. The design of the building is a great feat that took a long time to not only plan out but the execution of the building is something that takes modern art and makes it into a great new thing. This is not only my opinion many other realize this because the building was the Gold Award winner of the 2005 Emporis Skyscraper Award.
