For Good or Evil

Design’s Impact on Today’s Political and Media Landscape

Networking in general is really rare to me maybe because of my ignorance or lack of knowledge or maybe because of my less confidence as a Graphic designer to attend these event. Maybe this a new routine of life that I should practice for the rest of my life if I want to be a successful designer.

Visiting the event called For Good or Evil is something that I’ve to since it is required for my Topics in Graphic Design class. Honestly it is also because of our class trip to New York Daily News recently and had a good impression about the designers over there and the exchange was really helpful. It was from there that we heard that they are organizing this event and sound perfect to me.

The event was on 6th floor of Microsoft building in Times Square from 6pm to 8:30 pm. The moment we enter there are drinks including alcohol and snacks are served and every body was seems busy talking to each other.

The event panelist were
Paul Kim (host ) is Digital Creative Director at the Daily News and co-Director of the innovation Lab. Served as Creative Director and Design Director at consulting and start up organization. Attended the Rhode Island School of Design.
John Carlin started one of the first digital design studios in New York. Produced many interactive media for Cartoon Network, Comedy Central, Bloomberg and the Smithsonian. He also co-founded and runs Red Hot, which has produced albums and videos for over 25 years to help raise awareness and money to fight HIV/AIDS.
Paula Murgia is a seasoned innovator and patented inventor with a background in mental health, emerging technologies and digital marketing. Since 1998 she has introduced strategic roadmaps and emerging technology platforms to both pharmaceutical and CPG industries. He worked with clients such as Bayer Women’s Health, Johnson and Johnson, Clorox, Ford Motors, Macy’s, Capital One, AT&T’s etc.
Kelly Helfrich is a product designer who has been working in the mobile space since 2009. Moving into UX design, she was able to create large scale mobile properties for brands like Hot Wheel, Barbie. Kelly is the lead Product Designer for NHL mobile apps at MLB Advanced Media, where she applies the product thinking she gained at startups to product used by millions of hockey fans wordwide.

So Paul started the event with a reflection of recent US election and its out come and asked the question what is Design’s impact on Politics? Where each panelist answered their opinion but I like what John Carlin said that create something which people like and inside which have a positive message because it was really hard to reach out to the people at that time as there were so many from both side. I was thinking to myself that there was a great deal of responsibility as a designer which could change the cause of an election. After all campaign designers has to have a positive outlook and knowing the candidate rather then winning the campaign .

Later on they talked about design strategies and algorithm between user and business and co-operations. Kelly’s ramark for package design as she said its important to know between “How it looks vs How it works” remind me of the basic principle Form and Function. Its not only important to have a great aesthetically but its should work perfectly too.

Overall the event was helpful and was a great experience to see lot of different people. Among them I talked with a lady and she is an artist and a designer. She said its so important to have such event in today’s time. Where all the medias and graphic tools they used to influenced people and for all of these there is a designer who is creating and responsible for these and its important to reach out to the designers with such event.

Finally I left this event with a sense of pride as it was my first ever event like this and its encouraging to see lot of people with design background get together and share their thought. It was great!
