Warmups

Warmup 1.

  • Look at the Emigre catalogue—it is physically in the classroom but there’s a photo of it below—and write about what you see on page 22 (also tagged with a PostIt). Describe the various typefaces you see. Name their classifications. Is the article legible (meaning you can read it) is it readable (meaning you want to read it).
  • There’s a little answer to a comment one of you made in a post (why do a new version of an old face?).
  • Post in Student Posts> Type Talk > Lastname_TT_Emigre_101223

Warmup 2.

  • Write a post about the differences you see in the expressive type with by Courtney Wagasky shown in Classes 11 and 12 (using existing letterforms) and the expressive type by Timothy Goodman and Alexa Edgerton. Discuss one specific example, with one specific characteristic by each of the three designers.
  • Post to>Student Posts>Type Talk

Topic

Continue: Project 2 (Expressive Typeface, followed by lettering)
NOTE: Project 2 has a grade different from Project 1 and is due Class 20.

  • EXPRESSIVE WORDS: PART 1 Step 3 (Continuation of Class 12)
EDIT and KEEP IMPROVING your 4 words:
Professor will give comments and corrections on work so far.
    • Do you need to adjust things? Consider scale, repetition, placement.
    • Make sure that you are using the words from the list
    • Make sure that you are using a classic SANS Serif Typeface (not display, novelty or serifs)
    • No illustrations or added elements other than letters (glyphs from typeface)
    • Letters and words should not be taken out of their proportion.
You can remove parts of the letter, and extend ascenders and descenders if necessary.
    • Black only. No color.
  • Add a frame around your artboards and then save the illustrator file and export as jpg. It’s a 1pt (1 point) black stroke. You can make the first one and then copy and paste the other three.(We first did this in Class 10.)

We will place this to an InDesign File at a later date.

  • Complete your Expressive Type from Classes 12 and 13. (today). Save both ai and jpeg and upload.
  • Name: Lastname_Proj02_Expressive_101223
  • Upload to Dropbox in your folder.

New Topic Project 2 / Part 2  Lettering
Objectives

  • Understand the difference between lettering and creative typography with a typeface.
  • Understand lettering as it applies to branding, packaging, logotype designs and others areas.
  • Understand typographical experimentation.

Choose your favorite sport / favorite animal / favorite food / favorite game, favorite pastime such as listening to music, watching videos, playing a sport, etc.

  • General Specs:
    • Create a one of a kind representation (with letters) of your favorite pastime, or sport, food or holiday
    • Work area: 1980 x 1080 pixels (horizontal/rectangular)
    • DO NOT use an existing typeface.
    • Sketch, research and write your ideas FIRST. You’ll do a minimum of 6 sketches (more sketches are even better).
    • Use pencil when sketching, but keep in mind that for the next steps experimental use of material and technique ok: paper/collage, paints, photography, etc. Technique and application is up to you.
Note from Professor Giuliani, who devised the above sketches:
Remember that when doing quick thumbnails and first sketches,
add character to your ideas. Do not just do placement.
