Fashion Illustrations by Ludmila Hellman-Kavalla
I found very little information on-line regarding the Austrian fashion illustrator and designer, Ludmila Hellman-Kavalla. What was even more disappointing was not being able to find a single portrait of her. Ludmila Hellman-Kavalla was born in 1924 and graduated from the Vienna Academy of Applied Arts in 1950. Her training included courses in textiles, tailoring and fashion. In learning about fashion, she also had to learn how to create patterns, construct dresses and sew. Although I never knew the name Lumila Hellman-Kavalla, until recently, her style is a style that I admire. Throughout my life, I often referred to the pages of fashion magazines and Vogue pattern covers. Her style is one that I remember well as a youth studying Fashion Illustration at the High School of Art & Design, NYC in the 1980’s. In my own artwork below, like Ludmila Hellman-Kavalla, I primarily focus on movement, line, space, unity, value, and grace.
