Introduction
This research studies the background of excess content, which has resulted in the formation of innovative modern design and art—overstimulation. To be precise, the immense use of fast-paced, visually saturated media in recent years has affected creative practices and the way people look at art and design.
Background/Review of the Sources
The overstimulating theme was set in motion by the development of high-tech gadgets like television, the advent of video games, and, most recently, the internet and social media. Since the 1960s, the visual media culture effect, or more technically rapid sensory overload in media, has influenced various art and design movements. The trend of media like this can be seen in postmodernism, the period characterized by a lot of information and different forms. It was a kind of art that was composed of various fractions and was fastly changing in style, which was simultaneously reacting to the constant enlargement of media. The captivity of society in media because of the capitalist system was not only a burden on people but also affected graphic design, marketing, and digital art. The discussion of how overstimulation through visual media influences modern art is possible through the historical survey of different movements, such as pop art, experimental film, and the digital culture that we practice today.
Rationale
This research topic is highly significant culturally, socially, and politically because it depicts the issue of an overdose of overstimulating content in society. The fast consumption of visual media leads to health problems, an increased attention span, and changes in the societal structure. Understanding the adaption of design and art to such tectonic shifts occurring in media consumption is essential as it exposes the other problems of overwhelming information, addiction, and cultural transformations in the digital age. In the first place, the topic links with the worrying emergence of technology that dictates our way of life and perception, which is significant for me.
Method and Design
In my discourse, I will briefly introduce the concept of overstimulation and its roots in historical media changes. There are the following main sections which these research-supported arguments are likely to include:
- Historical Background:To the chagrin of numerous artists and designers, the television and digital media golden age significantly affected art and design. For instance, Robert Hughes, in his book The Art of Pop, opined that technological advancements allow the polygenesis of the evolution of art.
- Examine the impact of the television and digital media boom on art and design, citing sources like The Art of Pop by Robert Hughes and Understanding Media by Marshall McLuhan.
- Cultural Shifts: One of the features of the 1980s that also impacted modernity is the one that mocked the time as the decade of decaying urban cities and a great diminishing culture. However, it was the time of excess, as the newspapers depicted. It was shown that the 1980s were the beginning of postmodernity due to over-users utilizing CDs and samples of Postmodern Design by Judith G. M. Hoos. The following citation is The New Fontana Sophocles, No. 20, font. Alphabet.
- Discuss how overstimulation contributed to the rise of postmodernism in the 1980s and its lasting influence on modern design. Works like Postmodern Design by Judith G. M. Hoos and other relevant texts will be referenced.
- Design and Art in the Digital Age: This study investigates the long-term influences on most artistic expression during the age of digital technologies, virtual environments, and social media, which is now called contemporary design. Moreover, contemporary articles from design publications such as Wired and Design Observer will be referenced.
- Investigate the ongoing impact of digital technologies, social media, and virtual environments on contemporary design practices, referencing contemporary articles from design publications such as Wired and Design Observer.
- Social Implications: This is the dense impingement of over-saturation. An altered attention span leads to a shallower level of contemplation due to cerebral clobber. The Shallows by Nicholas Carr is a medium that emits plenty of information. In addition, there will be reference articles concerning attention disorders.
- Discuss how overwhelmed patients who are subjected to sensory overload suffer impaired cognitive and mental abilities, results of studies from psychology and the media like The Shallows by Nicholas Carr, and articles on attention disorders.
- Conclusion: Bring together the studies, analyzing the present and future design trends of products and societal behavior with the primary influence of over-stimulation.
- Summarize the research and explain how excessive overstimulation might cause technological development and social behavior.
