Here are the questions to which you should respond in your reading response:
- What common views do these artists/designers share and where might they disagree?
- Which elements of these texts remain relevant for the present, and which elements are problematic?
- Using visual examples from the Futurists and Constructivists, present the ways that political and economic power can be expressed through visual design.
- How has the communication process changed since the early 20th Century, specifically with regard to “feedback” and “noise”?
These artists share the common idea that designers play a crucial role in society. One thing they might disagree with is the style of their design. For example, Aleksandr Rodchenko and El Lissitzky, may not agree with F.T. Marinetti’s “fearless” and energetic designs in typography.
The idea that technology is changing the design is an element that is relevant today. Also when El Lissirzky states “ in the first place it is the consumer who determines the change by his requirements” is also relevant to today because the design is heavily connected to what clients/consumers want. Marinette stating that they will destroy museums, libraries, and academies of all kinds will be seen as problematic today since threatening to or trying to destroy someone’s property will get you arrested. Also, Rodchenko referring to his constructivist group as someone’s “last slave-workers” may be seen as problematic today because no one to be seen as should not be seen that way in any profession.
Political and economic power can be expressed through design through the use of a manifesto. Manifesto allowed designers to be bold and express their political stance through the use of text.
The communication process has changed since the early 20th century when it comes to feedback and noise. People can get feedback and noise from others online instead of having to physically go to someone and asking them what they think. Essentially Other designers can critique our work online.
